WATCH: The last 20 Kentucky Derby champs race in fantasy simulation

Who would win if the field was comprised of greats like Barbaro, Big Brown and Orb?

Since the window for horses to race in the Kentucky Derby only spans about a year, it's next to impossible to watch the greats go head to head. So how do you know which horse would win the Run for the Roses if the field was loaded with past champs like Barbaro, Smarty Jones and Fusaichi Pegasus?

Luckily we have the clever simulation above from HorseRaceGame.com, which uses a unique algorithm that factors in pace, running style, speed/stamina consumption and jockey intelligence to deliver amazingly accurate outcomes. This particular video pits each of the past 20 Derby winners against each other in a fantasy race for the ages.

I was in the infield to see Secretariat. It was a great experience—much of which I do not discuss even today. :)

Too bad Secretariat wasn't in that simulation. All the way in the back of the field...and then...BLAMM!

Can get very wild in the infield. Suspect you did not see much that day?

The last 20 Kentucky Derby champs race in fantasy simulation

I'm not a big horse racing fan but there hasn't been a single Triple Crown winner during that time, has there? If they're going to do a fantasy simulation, I'd want to see Man O' War, Seabiscuit, Secretariat, Affirmed, Alydar and Seattle Slew in there. Heck, if it's a fantasy simulation, take a few famous fictional horses, make up some numbers and put them in there too.

Let's see, there's "Silver", "Trigger", "Mr. Ed", "National Velvet", "Flicka", "Comet".

I'm afraid Comet would sweep the field.

Horce racing is one of those ‘odd’ events where some of the past horse champions produced better times that haven’t been touched even with the advancements in nutrition, breeding, and training.

Big Brown should have won the Triple Crown.

I would love to see Affirmed in this field.

Secretariat won the Derby in its all time record and IMO would have destroyed most of this field and all things being equal by about three lengths for the closest not counting racing luck.

Due to a misspent youth, I have been fortunate to have seen most of the best horses race in the past 55 or so years, bet on a lot of them, and saw some that had the ability to be the best which did not make it due to misfortune. The one that comes to mind for me is Hoist the Flag. I truly believe he would have been the equal of secretariat except for the fractured leg.

I don’t know. The simulation showed little speed in this field with fractions of 24 and 48 for the quarter and half mile...too linear.

Standing on top of a dumpster on the back stretch—I had a great view just about all the way around. That’s all I can tell you in a public forum. :)

Perhaps, but I'd tune in for Mr. Ed's post-race interview.

Not that we go to the Derby but mrs p6 and I watch every year. Her work even has a Derby Friday so the gals can dress up...mrs p6 makes a new Derby hat every year...and they have a party and betting pool.

It's all great fun but luckily mrs p6 doesn't know about the infield. If she knew what I have seen...!!!!!!

Well, the funniest thing I saw that time was a college fraternity that staked out their territory early in the morning. They put a little twine fence around themselves and their coolers. By the end of the day, not one of them was standing. One poor guy had passed out backwards into his styrofoam cooler, which exploded, leaving him laying in a pile of ice. He was only wearing shorts, no shirt, so he was suburned bright red head to toe. Burnt on one side, frozen on the other, unconscious—with his mouth wide open.

Besides the bacchanalian marathon, various romantic activities bloomed everywhere. What a great horse race.
