Q Here's a good one for you, Gary. I live in Alameda. One recent weekday about 8 a.m., I went out to my car to go to work and found a ticket on it for no front license plate. The time on the ticket was 3:42 a.m.
You mean to tell me that Alameda police have nothing better to do than go around putting tickets on cars at 3:42 in the morning? I've heard of Mickey Mouse before but this takes the cake, as it were.
A OK, I'll first perform my civic duty and say that two plates are required and without them you put yourself at risk of a ticket, even at 3:42 a.m. Now, I'll tell you how I really feel.
This is Mickey Mouse. Handing out tickets at weird hours while you are sleeping has happened in other cities and leaves a sour taste in my mouth. If I had heard someone rustling outside my home at that time of night, I would have called 911.

American citizens=cash cows.
Of course you're gonna get ticketed for trivia. It's all about the revenue, baby.
This guy should be GLAD that he got the ticket. This proves that the cops are out at all hours of the night, even when you sleep, keeping a sharp eye out for burglars and other ne’er-do-wells.
And, if you believe that crap, I’ll tell you more!
There is an obvious solution—move to a state which does not require front license plates.
Good thing he didn’t leave his dog out that night.
I too got a ticket in the wee hours in California for no front license plate.....however the dumbass didn’t notice the rear plate said ARIZONA
If your dog had been there, they would have killed him and arrested you for obstructing justice and resisting arrest with violence if you dared to complain about them being on your property at 3 am or for killing your dog.
Or they would have just shot you. After all, the ONLY thing that matters is that they get home safely after their shift.
What the hell’s next?
Police are going to break into your garage to make sure your vehicles are compliant?
I’d fight it as there are no laws regarding vehicles on private property, AFAIK.
Not to absolve the California police for having too much time on their hands, but the only time I was ever even noticed for not having a front plate, was in Montana.
CA car. The Montana cop explained he was just making sure the car wasn’t stolen.
I believe him, but it was the only time I got stopped for no front plate.
(which I now have)
It all depends on the state laws. Texas requires all vehicles display two Texas plates. Visitors are not required to have front and rear plates.
Move here, and you have 30 days to change to TX plates and change your driver license to your current TX address. Failure to do so, gets you a ticket and a hefty fine.

Only if you are stopped for some other reason. Lots of my neighbors moved here from other states, some as long ago as two years ago. They are planning on changing the plate when the one from their previous state expires. Hard to prove they’ve been here more than 30 days.
Stopped next to a truck that had obvious older damage, broken windshield, no turn signals and spewing lots of carbon out its tailpipe. Noticed that it had a brand new inspection sticker on it though (0515). Surely we don’t have any corruption in any company that does annual inspections! /s/
POLICE = revenue agents and with legalized pot they have even less to do. How about run in some illegal alien criminals and heroin dealers......
....Are you kidding!!! I could get shot!!
Far easier to harass and extract money from taxpayers, from the middle class
Excuse me but ticket while sleeping does not bother me.
Better than “no knock” raid by SWAT while sleeping.
I got pulled over once in Cali for having my front license plate up-side-down. I thought it was funny, but mr. CHP did not.
You may get away with that in some areas. When we lived in far NW Austin, there was a DPS trooper living a few houses down the street. He told some transplants they had 30 days, or he would give them a ticket. They decided to get TX plates.
In the olden days, they used to do traffic stops on some of the secondary arteries in Houston in the mornings. All they wanted to see was your driver’s license, proof of insurance and a quick glance at your stickers to make sure your plate was current and that you had a current safety inspection.
If the stickers were okay but the driver had no current license or valid insurance but someone else in the car did, the new driver took over and the previous driver received a very expensive ticket. If stickers weren’t current, they towed the car and issued a ticket.
They quit doing this several years ago and I would guess, particularly with the influx of illegals, that there are just lots and lots of people driving in Houston without a valid license and with no insurance. Just one of the reasons our auto insurance keeps escalating for those of us who do maintain coverage.
You don’t dare driving in my area without insurance. I’ve seen several young drivers who had no clue what they needed to show as proof of insurance. I have a lot of contact with the LEO here as part of my park ranger job. The tell me horror stories about the kids and their driving habits. Most often, it is texting and driving.
No problem, just tell the police that it is “racist” to demand to see some ID while you are driving...
