Man found beaten to death in Chester was Bosnian refugee

Dino Dizdarevic, whose family had fled to Kentucky from Banja Luka, Bosnia, in 1995 as war refugees, had no wallet when he was found. It wasn't until he was reported missing to Philadelphia police over the weekend that cops in Chester were able to identify his body.

Just what drew the handsome, raven-haired chemical engineer - who moved from Louisville to a North Philly loft with his boyfriend in August - to the gritty town 18 miles south is a mystery. Neither his sister nor his boyfriend of nearly two years, Nick McBee, could imagine why he'd go to Chester, where both said he'd never been before.

In 2010, Chester had 24 homicides, and a homicide rate of 64.3 per 100,000. The high homicide rate in 2010 prompted then-Mayor Wendell N. ...Law-enforcement sources said Dizdarevic's body was found partially clothed and beaten...what the story fails to say but other Philly media did report was that he apparently went to Chester after contacting someone on 'Grindr", the homosexual dating magazine well known to the gay community - all the charisma and good looks in the world won't stop a gay hookup gone mad......

Interestingly, Chester was the site of the fictional Ivy-Leaguish university where Tom Wolf's coming-of-age novel "I Am Charlotte Simmons" was set - as much as I like Wolf's writing, I found it difficult to suspend my disbelief about the goings-on in his story because I grew up only a few miles from Chester and it seemed to me an unlikely locale for a great college which had already slipped well beneath "gritty" when I was last there probably fifty years ago.....
