Scientists create first living organism containing artificial DNA

Researchers for the first time created microbes containing artificial DNA, expanding the universal genetic code that guides life. The advance one day could lead to new antibiotics, vaccines and other medical products not possible with today's bioscience.

In a report published Wednesday in Nature, the scientists said they created two additions to the normal genetic code, and then prompted bacteria to incorporate these pieces of man-made DNA with few ill effects.

"The cells recognized it as natural," said chemical biologist Floyd Romesberg at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., who led the research group.

"By one recent estimate, the market for biologic and protein-based therapies is expected to reach $165 billion a year by 2018.

Unfortunately due to ObamaCare, no one will able to afford any new therapies that might come from this. So I'm wondering where is this $165 billion coming from?

BTW, this is the sort of new medical advance that ObamaCare is designed to derail. Under Obama care people seriously ill are supposed to die --- not get lifesaving treatment.

They better be keeping a very tight lid on this place because if they let something dangerously weird out that threatens the health of humans and the planet as a whole, the entire would will hunt them down and torture them to death. They probably get the Kaddaffi treatment...death by crowbar.

And they damn well better know it.

What could possibly go wrong?

Why nothing, nothing at all.

...with few ill effects

How "few"? What sort of "ill effects"?

Scientists create first living organism……..

Did they create the cell membrane, the lysosomes, the endoplasmic reticulum, the golgi apparatus, the nuclear membrane, the cytoplasm., or any of the intracellular organelles without which a cell will not survive?

...and the other 588 million turned into dark seekers, and they got hungry and then they killed and fed on everybody.

No. They did some gene splicing into an already living cell. I guess the new twist is that the inserted gene was synthetic.

Now which alien from Star Trek was she again?

Wrong series. She's a sleestak from Land of the Lost. Not an alien at all. An evolved reptile.

Yeah, there’s no way this technology won’t be abused.

While I tend to agree that what we do with DNA and other sciences, I don't think that "...there’s no way this technology won’t be abused." is a good argument - it's exactly what the Left tells us when they say they need to control our guns and other parts of our lives.

This kind of tech could ultimately be used in nanobots, bots that could be injected as some sort of marker and control mechanism within the human body. Something that could essentially infect your entire system, hijack and take over your body systems and modify their function to achieve other purposes.

If you can inject a bot with artificial DNA that’s both scannable and able to receive radio signals within the human body, you got something that could be used for some very ugly purposes. Particularly if you can use it to make that bot replicate.

You get out of line, the bot gets a signal and starts doing very nasty things to you. That assume it won’t control you to the point where you even have a choice in the matter. We are talking Borg like tech here.

Define “artificial DNA”. Did they create the DNA from scratch or use existing DNA to start theirs?
