NFL Teams Ignore Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns made NFL draft history this week.

And not in a good way.

Six Texas draft hopefuls were skipped over in the NFL draft, including Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Jeffcoat. For the first time since 1937, the Longhorns failed to have a player selected in the NFL draft. Texas was one of just four schools from college football's five power conferences (Big 12, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12) to suffer the ignominious feat. Illinois, Northwestern, and fellow Big 12 member Kansas were the others.

The Texas shutout, however, was one of the big surprises of the draft.

The Longhorns entered the weekend with six draft hopefuls, including All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Jeffcoat, who also won the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end. All 32 NFL teams attended Texas' pro day March 26 to scout Jeffcoat and other Texas prospects.

I’ve often heard all they have at UT are steers and queers.

Kansas, Illinois and Northwestern got the snub too. Ohio State wasn’t shut out, but are likewise upset at the low opinion of their stars. Plenty of other schools feel snubbed. And NFL teams seem very unimpressed with the large number of underclassmen who became eligible.

Ohio State wasn’t shut out? They had 2 in the first round. How many Auburn or Alabama stars got drafted in the first round? And running back Carlos Hyde went before Tre Mason.

OSU had a pretty good number of draftees and after-draft free agent signings. Not sure why they would feel snubbed.

Maybe the NFL is getting like MLB, with entry-level skills at such a high level that there isn’t typically much difference between well-known draftees and the lesser-knowns and free agents. Success is more mental than physical.

And Sam was SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Was THAT a put up job? Wouldn’t doubt it.

Six players were drafted, including one that broke his ankle with 9 games left in the season.

I know of at least two Michigan State football players/commits that vowed to never watch ESPN again.

Michigan State, Rose Bowl winner and one of the best defenses in the country only had 1 player drafted. Those who received draft grades from rounds 4-7 and didn’t get drafted signed with teams as free agents.

Nothing beats the overnight Fox Sports Radio guy. He opened his show saying he didn’t care what tweeters and callers wanted, he was going to talk all night about the gay guy being drafted by an NFL team!

Jeffcoat was signed by Seattle. He could make the team.

Probably will make the team. In reality, it's better to be a free agent signee than a late round pick because those players can choose the situation that best fits them.
