Michael Sam: I should've been drafted in the first three rounds
cbs sportsline ^ | 5-11-14 | John Breech

Former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam became the first openly gay player in NFL history to be drafted when the Rams took him with the 249th pick on Saturday, but Sam almost didn't make history because he almost fell out of the draft.

Sam was taken with the eighth-to-last pick, meaning he almost wasn't drafted at all, something he found rather shocking. The NFL's first openly gay player said he should've been picked higher.

"From last season alone, I should've been in the first three rounds -- SEC Defensive player of the year, All-American," Sam said, listing off his 2013 accomplishments, via the Rams official website. "I should have gone in the top three rounds easily."

Instead of going in the first three rounds though, Sam almost didn't go in any round. So what would have happened if Sam wasn't drafted?

According to NFL Network, the Bears, Giants and Ravens were all interested in signing Sam if he hadn't been taken by St. Louis. The Rams also would have tried to sign Sam if they hadn't grabbed him with the 249th pick.

Bears coach Marc Trestman said on Saturday that Sam would have been a defensive end in Chicago, not a linebacker, "When someone has that number of sacks, you have to pay attention to that," Trestman said of the Bears' interest in Sam, via the Chicago Sun-Times.

As it is though, Sam is with the Rams, and he's happy about that. "The Rams know what the hell they're doing."

And what the Rams did was draft Sam, which you can watch below.

He would have been drafted much higher if he played tight end rather than wide receiver.

re: Texas Longhorns -— no one drafted by NFL

The Texas shutout, however, was one of the big surprises of the draft.

The Longhorns entered the weekend with six draft hopefuls, including All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Jeffcoat, who also won the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end.

I just looked at Michael Sam's combine results. They are quite mediocre. I then compared them to VPI defensive end James Gayle's combine results. Gayle went undrafted. Here's the comparison:

Michael Sam James Gayle
40-yd dash 4.91 sec 4.70 sec
Bench Press 17 reps 26 reps
Vertical Jump 25.5 in 37.0 in
Broad Jump 114 in 122 in
3-Cone Drill 7.80 sec 7.19 sec
20-yd Shuttle 4.70 sec 4.27 sec

Gayle has now signed with the Giants as a free agent. Can someone explain to me how it's possible that the Rams could possibly take Sam over Gayle after Gayle beat him in all six categories?

Has Sam never heard of “undrafted free agent”. There are dozens of them playing in the NFL. But because of their fear of the Gay Mafia, the NFL brass forced the Rams to draft this undersized, mediocre player.

None of the other teams wanted a player who would insist on wanting to redecorate the locker rooms with a new FABULOUS color scheme.

What an A-hole.

He's free to believe whatever he wants, but when a guy who is drafted in the seventh round makes a comment like this he's effectively telling three or four of his own new teammates that he should have been drafted ahead of him.

This graphic would apply here:

I ditched TV in 2001. Life got better instantly. More time spent doing things productively, learning, less stress and helps do my part to defund liberals. That’s like $15,000 so far they didn’t get. And that is just one person.

People say it doesn’t make a difference? It does.

I wonder if the NFL promised the Rams some kind of compensatory pick if they got him?

The pick that the Rams used was a compensatory pick. All the bottom of the barrel picks were compensatory.

(IMHO) Newly drafted; aberrant player, throwing a "hissy" fit.
National Fairy League, "goes down" to the mat for aberrant player.
The St. Louis Rams hopes to "ram (fisting)" through it's competition,
Esp. the SF '69ers, Packers, Miami.. any coastal team.

NFL Owners are you providing body lotion for him & male his bride?

Thanks to the generous TV donations of Americans more concerned with their entertainment than freedom, the reeducation camp is now a reality. Get that cable/Dish check in the mail folks!

Every time a conservative posts on the net that he has been sent to one to keep his job or his kids, they should be asked if they funded libs in this manner. Then told actions have consequences and ignored henceforth. Because people did this to themselves.

We cut the cord. Cancelled cable and ported the home phone to a 10 buck a month forwarding setup. We’re saving about 120 bucks a month.

FIL no longer gets to sleep in front of news from Chicago, but oh well.

Guaranteed he will be a starter no matter how badly he plays. Libs and media will say it’s homophobic if he isn’t a starter. Some of the media is already demanding he be on the starting team and saying the Rams will have hell to pay if they don’t make him a starter.

When I was a kid we played “smear the queer”.
That was fun.
The queer was the guy holding the ball and the object was to mutilate him
If you could catch him.

I was never a huge TV guy to begin with, average I guess, but I genuinely don’t miss it. I haven’t bought a Hollywood/lib made movie or been to the theater in years either.

But I rediscovered my love of playing music and spend my time and cash on that. and now I have something physical to show for it. And I have always been a big reader anyway so between the two, there is no reason to ‘want’ to see shows filled with gay/liberalism...not that there ever was.

It drives me crazy how willing Freepers are to make excuses for keeping their cord. Not a single one can say they do not know what their money funds and they do it anyway.

Is it possible to cut out ALL lib connected goods and services? No. But this is an easy one and it does the most damage. No one will die without a TV. No one. So how willing are people to make such a simple sacrifice? How much to they believe the words they say daily? Will they back them up? Or will they keep funding the left as the left takes more and more of their country from them?

Defunding the main propaganda arm would likewise damage the left.

We do get streaming Netflix and the occasional Amazon movie, but it’s very inexpensive and we can pick and choose.

Last night I showed my grandson the movie Romancing the Stone. I had to fast forward about 30 seconds of it, but the rest of it was good clean fun: car chases, shootouts, a car chase in a river, a treasure map, a treasure, a car going over a waterfall, Danny DeVito getting pummeled by a matronly woman, alligators, snakes, mudslides, a bus crash, etc.

Sam had to be #249. It was, like, meant to be.
