Music TV Talent Shows Fade

On television at least, it looks as if the beat doesn’t go on. The phenomenon of music-based television shows, which have dominated the ratings for more than a decade, seems by nearly every measure to be over or in steep decline.

“They flooded the market,” said Simon Cowell, perhaps the individual most responsible for turning amateur singers into superstars, with his roles on “American Idol,” “The X Factor” and “America’s Got Talent.” “There have just been a ton of shows, and something has simply gone awry.”

All these reality shows tend to bore people eventually.
Pawn Stars, Swamp People, American Idol, Amazing Race, Duck Dynasty, American Pickers, Dirty Jobs, etc. It is the same show over and over again. I have loved some of them at first, but how many times can you watch a guy catch a gator?

The reason the networks love these type of shows is that typically they do not have a group of “actors” they have to pay a $100K an episode or big name writers or directors. It is cheap to produce these shows. They are very profitable for the networks. Think of the merchandise the History Channel sells with “Pawn Stars” printed on it. It is big money. I bet Rick and his dad see very little of that.

Bring back westerns, spy shows and Drama. The public is fickle—they want new things—or at least new-old things like 24—

They cancel the scripted shows that interest me. The only thing I watch is a very small selection of “reality” programing and it is mostly because I enjoy the individuals, not the “reality” going on around them.

“But, the channels are having a terrible time finding new shows that make it each year.”

That’s were sex and depravity comes in. The next level.
