He Put on a Bulletproof Vest and Asked a Friend to Shoot Him. She Missed Her Mark.
The Blaze ^ | 15 May 2014 | Dave Urbanski

Blake Randall Wardell, 25, was congregating with friends in a house’s garage in the wee hours of the morning when he donned a bulletproof vest. Then Wardell asked his 18-year-old friend Taylor Ann Kelly to shoot him, according to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina.

Kelly complied. But the small-caliber bullet hit above the kevlar portion of the vest and then went into Wardell’s heart, killing him, Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown told WYFF-TV in Greenville.

CPR was being attempted on Wardell when authorities arrived at the scene about 2:40 a.m; EMS personnel confirmed Wardell was dead.

Not all of us have a bullet proof vest, but for those so inclined, why not test the air bags in your car.

I wonder if she was using the rapper grip (modified Seagal?) when she popped him.

” What was he doing with a vest in the first place?”

I heard a report on the radio that said they found it rummaging in some dumped trash. I think they said it was an old Vietnam era flak jacket.

Those had a zipper in the front that I believe a bullet could get through, even if zipped.

I can imagine the aftermath. As the young man lies dying, the girlfriend calls 911.

Girl: “I shot and I think killed my boyfriend! What should I do?”

911 Operator: “Well, first let’s make sure he is actually dead.”

Girl: “(sniff) Okay...” [sets down phone] BLAM! “Now what?”

Now, I’m not braggin’ here, ‘cuz what I did does not quite qualify for a Darwin but when we were first married, I asked my wife to shoot me with a bean bag gun we got for Christmas.

It was one of those things that shoots a 1/4 pound bean bag full of shot using a couple of CO2 cartridges. I just wanted to see if it would be really effective in stopping someone.

I bent over and she was supposed to shoot me in the “fleshy part”. She sort of missed and hit me in the small of the back. I had a bruise the size of a baseball and walked funny for about a week.

To this day she still has not admitted that it was an accident. We’ve been married 35 years and I’m still not sure.

Yikes!

If they found it in the trash, they couldn't be confident what the heck it was: bullet-proof vest in good condition, bullet-proof vest discarded because the lining was worn out and no longer effective, or flak jacket that even in mint condition wouldn't have stopped a bullet fired at close range.

I wouldn't have thought it possible, but your information adds a level of stupidity to their conduct.

Likely negligent homicide. Maybe involuntary manslaughter. No mens rea.

Stupid’s not a crime. Discharging a gun within city limits might, which is what the charge would be if she’d have hit the vest.

It's been 20+ years, but a manufacturer tested his new vest with a 44 Magnum—that he aimed at his stomach. He said he hated being the guinea pig, even backed up with a couple of telephone directories stuffed underneath the vest!
