Sitka newcomer watches helplessly as bear devours dog
The Anchorage Daily News ^ | May 14, 2014 | LAUREL ANDREWS

Paco, a 2-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix, was killed and eaten by a brown bear as Sitka resident Paula Myers watched in horror just a few feet away on Monday. Paula Myers never imagined that her first bear encounter would occur just a few feet from her Sitka home, and that her dog, 2-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix Paco, would be killed and consumed by a brown bear right in front of her eyes. Myers and her husband, Brad Langdorf, moved to Sitka in January to work at Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium. Coming to Alaska was a new adventure for the couple, Myers said. "I had not seen a bear yet," Myers said Wednesday. "I had no idea it would be 5 feet from my house, eating my dog."

What, no gun and living in the Alaskan wild? Perhaps they will wise up eventually.

the "rat-dog" looked tiny, no wonder the bear sniffed and said, "Chipmunk".

Don’t get a dog that’s a glorified cat.

A few years back, a golden eagle spiraled down to snatch up my 20-odd pound Portuguese Podengo Medio.

It did not care that I and 6 other big dogs were in the yard with her.

I have never run so fast in my life.

I shrieked what was apparently a universal distress scream which made Gypsy flatten herself to the ground.

I ran by and scooped her up just in time to have the eagle’s wings whap my in the back of the head.

It flew up and started another spiral downward.

I screamed for the dogs who had already started running for the back door, which we all barreled through as a mob.

The damned eagle was still circling the yard after we got inside.

[this happened prior to the arrival of the Dobes]

It was the last time I let them out without having firepower on hand.

And now, we have bears, too.

So I upped the odds.

I wonder how many they have on hand today...

I researched what kind of gun to carry when hiking in Alaska. The closest thing to useful I owned was a 12 gauge shot gun if I mail ordered special slugs.

I decided to limit my hiking to the lower 48.

Our neighbor’s Chihuahua was attacked by an alley cat... of course the cat won that one.

That dog was never the same...

I’m in Pittsburgh and a few years ago we had a Yorkie Terrier snatched out of a yard and carried away by a hawk.

Coming to Alaska was a new adventure for the couple,

I understand the problem. They thought they were there to watch the whales. Bears don't watch whales, they watch chihuahuas.

Who moves to bear country and lets their Chihuahua walk around without a leash or behind a fence? There is a reason all those Huskies and Malamutes are decent sized dogs. I don’t live in Alaska, but two of my there cats are bigger than a Chihuahua...
