And the dogs are missing their fire hydrants. By the way, just how does one go about stealing a fire hydrant?

You turn off the water main that feeds it, and you unbolt it. Not turning off the water main would be a 'hold my beer' moment, and maybe a Darwin Award moment.

What the heck is a thief going to do with a fire hydrant? Sell for scrap metal? Install in your yard to provide a marker for your dog??

Sell it for scrap. Maybe sell it to other towns especially if its one of the new lead free firehydrant that bam bam’s regulations requires.

A 50 plus crook needs an especially harsh sentence. At that age you’ve long since lost the thin cover of youthful stupidity.

Just unbolt it. The valve is deep in the ground, and there is no water in that column. Otherwise, the water would feeze in the winter.

Why would one steal a fire hydrant?

Because it’s there?

Russell Mack looks like he got hit in the face by either a fire hydrant or maybe a “Mack” truck.

That's for up north. Down south, wet barrel hydrants are common.

Those have to be dry well FH! Wet wells are made of brass and will burst if temps too low CA has wet wells, how do I know I installed a ton. Upper elevation in CA and any area subject to low temps we install dry wells. ! Dry wells are made of cast iron and shut off below freeze zone. Not much value in cast iron! Maybe at most 10 cents a lb! All they accomplished was vandalism.

I didn’t know that. I just assumed the design was “standard,” more or less. These guys were working a cold climate.

I can’t even begin to count the number of cases I prosecuted in 25 years. But this I know ... I never prosecuted one for fire hydrant theft.

To shut down a water main you need a Gate Key, It’s about 6 ft in length and has a square that is made to fit the Gate Valve! A wet well has hollow bolts that secure it to a flange on piping that is encased in concrete, so if you hit it with your car it snaps off like you see in the movies. If you hit a dry well it will prob just lean a bit and your car is screwed! Dry wells are encased in concrete
at the ditch line to prevent blow off @ 200 plus lbs per sq inch!

There are also dry hydrants that are nothing but a connector for the pump truck with a pick up pipe in the river or creek near by. Not hooked to the municipal water supply.
