When in high-school I ran 1/2 mile open, the 2 mile relay, the mile, the 2 mile, and sometimes the 3 mile.
If what you say were true, I would have kept running, and saved myself a lot of headaches trying to woo young women.
All I ever felt when I was done running was relief, not release.
Yeah that is my take too. I walk and of course see lots of runners but they seldom look happy. Walkers on the other hand often smile.
Most charity runs are not marathons.
That said,I don’t get it either but 2 of my kids, and now a grandchild run in road races and marathons.

Looks like your wife is having the last laugh!
I agree with you about the hips.
I’m still semi recovering from foot surgery, big bunion and 3 hammertoes.
My wife and I are back up to a minimum of one walk per day with a goal of two walks over a mile. We do a fairly steep hill, which one of the ladies on our block, a former runner now a walker called heart break hill.
In the past 3-4 weeks, we have seen two runners. One is a young millennial female back with her parents on our block. She runs downhill and on the flat and walks up hill. The other is a guy, who may have been a good athlete in his 30’s.
Some so called walkers are so slow, my wife and I walk pass them after giving them a 5 minute head start.
We can’t count the walkers. There are singles, pairs and as my wife says, small herds with more women than men.
Re the shoes, we buy our walking shoes from a running shoe shop. About two decades ago they wisely got into the walking shoe fitting and appropriate socks which are about 70% of their business.
In our wino country, your observation is the same as ours.
“As someone who has been jogging since 1971, I think running has gone way down in popularity.
I dont know the statistics. But if I go shopping for real running shoes, they are a lot harder to find. Most athletic shorts are basketball style, where there used to be racks of shorts good for actually DOING something.
And when I was in college (think 1970s), lots of folks jogged. I finished a math class at the local community college this spring, and there were not many students who looked capable of jogging very far from their computer screen...or their donuts.”
