Correct me if I’m wrong, but mail delivery is one of the things government does that *is* specifically outlined in the Constitution.

Who gets mail anymore?...
We pay almost all our bills electronically
E-mail is efficient and fast

The post office is becoming an anachronism

Curbside boxes do have the advantage that you can put your outgoing mail into one, which you can’t do if you have a mail slot in your door.

Sigh. Post office is such a mess! But at least we get mail delivered— in some countries you have to go to the central post office and ask if you have mail or to mail something. And when you get mail it might have already been opened and your packages are stolen, broken, or things missing. If it comes to a curbside group that’s still better than not having delivery! And I am ok with delivery only Monday- Friday if it helps control costs.

Just close the post office and have any delivery service in the area guarantee twice a month delivery to all locations in the areas in which they are licensed.

Pick ups would be on call.

“Your United States Government - charging FAR more for doing FAR less.”

Kind of a catchy slogan, and perfectly apt for the Obama administration.

Of course, in order to begin this conversion, the USPS will have to radically raise postage rates.

To me the most logical "fix" for the post office is to base delivery on volume to each route. VERY busy (lots of mail covering little territory) gets delivery 6 days a week. Maybe 5 days for typical suburban routes. Rural routes may get 3 day per week delivery (M, W, F or T, Th, S). There is NO Sunday delivery now, so no one can make the case that skipping a day would be a drastic harm.

Of course, the biggest problem is union rules and generous retirement benefits, as well as loads of employees on disability.

privatize the whole thing and some of this will happen but at least the decisions will be economically rational and not politically fixed

Everything is done electronically these days, even bill payment. I get two or three critical pieces of paper mail every year.

The vast bulk of stuff that arrives in my box in junk mail, flyers, GOP solicitations - all go in the trash. It's a revolving door of trash from curbside mailbox to curbside garbage pickup.
