No respect: Navy is the least prestigious military branch in the eyes of Americans
The Washington Times ^ | 05/23/2014 | S.A. Miller

Americans say the U.S. Army is the most important service branch to national defense, but the Marine Corps is still considered the most prestigious, said a Gallup poll released Friday.

The annual poll, timed to mark the start of the long Memorial Day weekend, showed that 26 percent of Americans say the Army is the most important military branch, followed closely by the Air Force at 23 percent. The Marine Corp was called the most important by 19 percent, the Navy by 17 percent and the Coast Guard by 3 percent, the poll found.

My Marine father-in-law (retired Gunnery Sergeant) held to the opinion that the Marine Corps was part of the Department of the Navy — the “Men’s Department”. It’s a funny line, but it shouldn’t obscure the fact that servicemen have a lot of respect for the other branches.

From A Few Good Men:

Kaffee: Have I done something to offend you?

Lt. Kendrick: No, I like all you Navy boys. Every time we've gotta go someplace to fight, you fellas always give us a ride.

Well, there’s nothing like starting out a Memorial Day weekend with a gratuitous slap in the face. I’ll be mourning my fallen comrades from all services. No preferences, because at this point I think they’re a little beyond that sort of thing.

It’s amazing how many people think the SEALs are part of the Army.

I think they did see some action in wartime even in Indochina

yes, they conducted Operations from 65 to 73 in Vietnam.

US Marines entered Vietnam with a “practice” Amphib assault at Da Nang...
When they landed on the beach, they were greeted by a sign reading, “Welcome to Vietnam-US Navy UDT/SEAL Teams”

B.S. -— all branches of the military are equally revered by patriots.
The author, I would wager, is not a patriot by a provocateur.

“The Marine Corps has consistently been considered the nation’s most prestigious military branch...”

They have the best uniforms.

If you’re in this country’s uniform in harms way you have my eternal respect. Further gradations are unnecessary; a bad cooks mate can ruin an operation

My brother and I have been debating this for nearly forty years. Nobody ever wins. I think the Navy is for guys who like to share bunks with other guys and he thinks the Army is for people who didn’t get a high enough GT score to enlist in the Navy or Air Force. My son in law is a Marine and he thinks they are unbeatable but I still beat him at racquetball though a brawl would be a different story. Go figure.

I agree, but I’ve watched the navy frontrun the rest of the services for years on “progressive” social issues. Spent a portion of my army time in Panama, and we used naval gunfire and USMC Colt teams in joint operations all the time. I have a great deal of respect for each of the services, but the navy brass is making it harder and harder to respect the judgment of that branch’s senior leadership. Plus whenever a ship runs aground, you read about it. Can’t say the same thing for every time a regimental commander gets lost in the woods and captured by the OPFOR during a training exercise.

Every Navy base in the State of Washington is in a great location.

While Everett is nice, it’s no NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor where I spent my last year in High School MANY years ago.

Whenever the USAF wants to conduct an air raid, they wanted Navy EA-6B Prowlers to go first to fry or otherwise destroy enemy AA radar sites.

When it comes to electronic countermeasures, no one does it better than the U.S. Navy. The Navy is even better now that the transition to the EA-18G Growler is almost complete.

A humorous, and touching short (about 10 mins.) on the topic of the Army/Navy rivalry. I still get a tear in my eye, every time I watch it. Best, to all.
