Ice cream is like sex - even when it’s bad it’s pretty good. So these comparisons are kind of silly. I would rather have Breyers Cookies & Cream than many of the fancier varieties - many of them are too sweet and rich for my taste.
Another vote for Blue Bell Homestyle Vanilla. There is really no comparison. For those of you who are doubtful, go get a gallon and eat some with no toppings or adornment. It is amazing. A rich, creamy, eggy, vanilla explosion in every bite.
Off to the kitchen I go!
In the Summer of 1969 I ran the milkshake machine at a huge Summer retreat. At the beginning of the Summer the Sealtest guy came by and showed me how to operate the machine, to disassemble it for cleaning etc.
He told me he could make the best milkshake I ever tasted but that it was illegal to sell it in North Carolina. He then took a half gallon of ice milk mix and poured it into the machine.
After it was ready, he made a milk shake for me and sure enough, it was the best one I had ever tasted. I asked him why it was illegal to sell it and he said it was so rich that it made people sick. sure enough, maybe 15 minutes later I began to feel a bit nauseous. I never did get so bad that I threw up buy I understood what he was saying.
I think Kroger’s Private Selection is better than Hagen Daz. I get it at Ralph’s.
I’ve been buying their strawberry and their Crushed Vanilla Bean.
A review:
Smurf flavor

Schwan’s. Real milkfat is used and it’s not puffed up with air like most grocery store brands.
Always amazed by these Best of Anything articles. Food is subjective, no one can agree on this stuff. This is just an eye catching ploy to make look at the link, read the article.
I remember a drug store chain that used to sell ice cream dirt cheap and was rated one of the best in townit was Thrifty Drugs, long since gone, bought out. Ever heard of Mashti Malone’s? In every region there is no doubt a purveyor that is known for its ice cream. Which one is the best is just a just a waste of time, only to make another buck off an article. That’s OK, but do not tell me what is best. Just a thought
.
Ben & Jerrys started adding high fructose corn syrup years ago.
Junk.
Haagan Daz still has a few flavors that don’t have it.
Ice Cream is Ice Cream. HCFS is not ice cream.
Blue Bunny pistachio
No Blue Bell?
Worthless.
And wrong on multiple levels.

As others have mentioned, Blue Belle is really quite good. I also like Turkey Hill quite a bit. For something a little different, I like Kroger supermarket’s “upscale store brand”, Private Selection. They sell some pretty interesting mixes, like Sweet Cream with Cannoli, and Chocolate Eclair flavors.
I don’t do Ben and Jerry on general principles.
In a pinch, however, Häagen-Dazs will do.
As a supporter of the Second Amendment, I should have secured a part-time position..."...imagine that; me working for you." ('Signs')
I can get a gallon for under $6.00 and it is really good.
Obviously a Yankee commie taste test
Ben and Jerry’s way overrated....funky flavors
Blue Bell for sure best large market
But....Graeter’s of Ohio...yes...a Yankee brand is very very good....richest I’ve found here
I grew up in Mississippi 50 years ago on Pet....Bordens...Seale Lily....Seal test....Ann Page......and Breyers...their vanilla bean is still good for brownies...not overwhelming
We used to have ice cream trucks...not panel vans...they had big freezers on back

Game over.....they are the Gods of ice cream
Very good ice cream in weird unexpected place...Road Runner ice cream in Ocho Rios....I used to drive an hour from Duncan’s beach just to get it....Rum Raisin
I like southern homemade from custard base....vanilla or peach or strawberry ...fresh....mo cream...mo better
Buy that commercial Sysco pink label cream with 40-45% butterfat per serving....yeah baby...now were talking
