Couple accuses mail carrier of fatally injuring their dog with a rock

FORT WORTH — Police and U.S. Postal Service officials are investigating a complaint by a Meadowbrook area couple that a mail carrier fatally injured their Yorkshire terrier by hitting him with a rock.

The 5-year-old dog named Maxwell wandered across the street from his owners’ residence in the 3600 block of Hazeline Road about 11 a.m. Saturday, Maxwell’s owner, Lawrence Brown, said Monday.

Brown, 46, said he was in the garage and didn’t realize Maxwell was across the street when he heard a dog yelping in pain.

As he walked toward the street, Brown saw the mail carrier and asked, “What did you do to that dog?”

“He said, ‘I got me one,’ ” Brown said.

That’s when Brown realized that the injured dog was Maxwell.

“I asked him why he hit my wife’s dog with a rock, and he said, ‘I did what I had to do,’ ” Brown said.

A veterinarian at an emergency clinic told the Browns that Maxwell had a shattered skull and severe spinal cord injury and couldn’t be saved, so the dog was euthanized, Lawrence Brown said.

A Fort Worth police officer “responded to an animal cruelty report call” about 2:15 p.m. Saturday from the Browns’ address, said officer Daniel Segura, a police spokesman. “The victim told officers that the possible suspect was the mail carrier,” Segura said.

Police have talked to a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier’s supervisor, Segura said.

Police are not releasing the letter carrier’s name, and no arrest has been made, Segura said.

The postal service is investigating the Browns’ complaint, said Arlene Sanchez, a Postal Service spokeswoman for the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“The postal service takes the issue of dog bite prevention very seriously,” Sanchez said by email. “We are saddened at the loss of the customer’s pet.

Meeter readers are issued a dog repellant that works well, and I’ve seen others without spray simply place their clipboards between them and the small dogs.

Dear God that’s horrible.

I cannot imagine.

I’ve never had anybody in a rush to get in the yard *before* I put my dogs away..but, well, they’re not poor little Yorkies, either.

:(

Yorkies are such sweet dogs, even if and that is a BIG IF, even if one of the yorkies might have grabbed onto the guys leg, so what, their teeth are so tiny, no reason to hit him with a baton..what’s the worst thing that happens..he can ask the lady if the dogs have had their shots or at most sue her for the doctors visit..but to go as far as to use a baton(And what meter reader walks around with a baton?) against a defenseless little animal just broke my heart..I cried like a baby after hearing the story..and the meter reader had death threats made against him, can’t say I blame them, I would have been in the front of the line ready to hit him with a baton see how he liked it

I know!

Fer cryin’ out loud, if a *Yorkie* scares you, you should just stay home and hide under your bed.

This was a sick power trip.

I sincerely hope they fire him and fine him...at the very least.

*Somehow*, my dainty mom managed to deliver mail for over 30 years on a rural route that was heavily populated with farmer/hillbilly/redneck territorial hounds and porch dogs with no fences or chains without trouble.

The only dogbite I ever got was from a Neighbors Yorkie when I was 17. It sneaked up behind me and bit my right achilles tendon. That hurt like hell.

Anyhow, I know a few letter carrier and dog stories. I knew one guy who smacked——a much larger dog-—— in the head with a pop bottle he had just drained and still had in his hand. The dog left him alone after that.

This guy had no excuse to use a rock since he was issued repellent spray.

I thought they equipped the mailmen with mace. Is this the case? Mace beats killing the animal.

I simply hope that something befalls these people that causes them ten times the emotional pain that they caused the dog owners. That’s all I’m gonna’ say.

This indeed is a sad story. Postal carriers are required to carry mace for dog protection. A rock was unnecessary.
But on the other side, the dog should have been on a leash or in a fenced area. You do not let your dog run the neighborhood. For your protection and the dog.

The cops in our small town carry dog biscuits when they encounter a dog while working. I read one police report where a scuffle during arrest occurred. The dog bit down one the officer’s ear. She said it was not breaking skin, just clamping on the ear. End of the story, the man went to jail, and the dog was safe, and the officer was no worse for the wear. I think these dog killings are a departmental attitude. In the last 40 years I do not believe there has been an incident of a dog being killed by any officers in our county.

If your dog bit me I’d fight the dog off and then you’d get something.
