Abortion clinic worker counsels women to “be selfish” and abort

In the book Abortion: a Positive Decision, pro-choice author Patricia Launneborg paints a rosy picture of abortion. She quotes a number of abortion clinic workers talking about how wonderful their jobs are and how much they are helping women. In fact, one interviewed clinic director favorably compares providing abortions to performing heart transplants:

I’ve said many times that the amount of good that we do here in one day doing 10, 20 abortions is far greater than somebody working in a heart transplant unit doing one or two heart transplants on 64 year old men. (p 26)

At one point, however, Launneborg does let slip that she knows exactly what’s at stake in the abortion debate:

No matter that legal abortion is as safe a procedure as having your tonsils out or a penicillin injection or wisdom tooth extracted. It is far more than a safe medical procedure because of the complicated decision-making that is involved, and the fact that it has to do with sex and life and death. (3 – 4)

Exactly whose death is she talking about? The woman doesn’t die in the abortion (most of the time). This is the only place in the book where Launneborg comes close to admitting that abortion is killing.

One of the abortion providers describes how she encourages women to be “selfish”:

I think it’s okay to be selfish. I don’t think there’s anything bad about putting yourself first. I don’t mean selfish is in the sense of greediness. I mean thinking clearly about yourself and what is best for you and the world and what you can deal with.… I can list you a million reasons why I wouldn’t want to have a kid, and they’re all selfish. But what is the point of being selfless about it? Why have a child that’s not wanted? So I see selfishness as a virtue in making choices for yourself and your life.(157)

In counseling women considering abortion, this clinic worker encourages women to put themselves first and completely disregard the well-being of their unborn babies. Some women, apparently, took this advice to heart.

Here are some quotes from women who had abortions:

A lot of people would argue that, that’s a life, but I say, what about my life?… Do I think abortion is pro-life? It’s pro-my life, and I am the most important person in the world and I want to make myself happy.… A good friend of mine has 2 kids, she’s a perfect mother, roast on Sundays. Good for you, if that’s what you want, more power to you. Let me have what I want.( 134)

This is not right for my soul’s growth at this time. You can basically say to the child, I’m not equipped to help you grow up right yet. I’m not grown up myself. I choose not to let you into my life for your benefit. I need to mature, I need to grow.(This woman had 2 abortions) (94)

You’ve got to tell yourself, I am worth a hell of a lot, and I come first. Because as women we’re told everything else comes first. But my well-being, my peace, my value comes first. The focus of my life should – and can – be me,… So when the outside says you should be thinking of the child, say No. The only thing you should be thinking about is you.(72)

Abortions aren’t anti-life. Abortions are pro-life, my life. (This woman had 3 abortions)(58)

It would be a mistake to characterize all women having abortions as selfish. Many women are driven to abortion by desperation, feeling that they have nowhere to turn. Every counselor who has worked at a crisis pregnancy center can tell you that many women do agonize over their decisions.

Others are pressured into abortions by their partners or, in the case of teenagers, by their parents. There is no “typical” abortion patient. So it would be a mistake to assume that these quotes are representative of all women who have abortions.

Also, as damning as these quotes are, it is good to keep in mind that these women grew up in a consumer culture where they were constantly given the message, through the media. through their peers, and through the efforts of pro-choice groups and organizations, that abortion is an acceptable and moral choice. The fact that abortion is legal, and has been legal for the entire lives of many of these women, sends the message that abortion is okay. They have been encouraged by their abortion clinic workers to put themselves first and disregard their babies’ needs. It is easy to judge these women, but doing so is counterproductive. We must reach out even to these women, with compassion.

I wish people would listen to them when they are being honest. Liberals, in their words when they are in a “safe” place, are the greatest evidence against liberalism.

It is sometimes difficult reasoning with morally depraved idiots. So many of these women are so blinded.

The product, abortion, is skillfully marketed and sold to the woman at the crisis time in her life. She buys the product, finds it defective and wants to return it for a refund. But, it’s too late.

When I look at my brother's two amazing adopted daughters, I am grateful for the women who thought differently.

It horrifies me to think that a "choice" could have deprived the world of these two lovely girls, and I pray for comfort and peace for their courageous mothers.

There was once an abortion doctor who thought the same. He wanted to adopt because his and his wife could not conceive. It got to him that he was aborting kids he and his wife could raise. Finally one day they did adopt a girl but she was hit and killed by a car (accident) years later. He honestly felt God was punishing him for being an abortionist. He did quit the job. Can’t remember his name but remember that story.

Anti-Semitism has been part of European culture for a thousand years. It made the Holocaust possible if not probable. Around six million give or take?

In America, this forty year culture of guilt free killing was imposed on an unwilling society, a society devoted to life as a first right among the many that God gave us.

Just as early Americans were certain that God would eventually punish them for the sin of slavery, our national punishment for fifty million state sanctioned murders is long overdue.

Perhaps we are witnessing it now, for the Left's stranglehold on our nation, institutions, society and very lives increases every day.

How much self hatred-attached to hatred felt toward life and the human race must a woman feel to even have such an attitude? To talk that way out loud requires pure loathing.

Making babies the right way is an act of faith.

A woman who talks this way has no faith...in anything. She's just all dead inside, and the closest she can come to happiness on the horizon, not touching it but seeing it off in the distance, is to make everything and everyone around her just as dead.

So, really (as Norma McCorvey discovered) the abortion debate isn’t about women in very difficult straits having to make a gut-wrenching decision, it’s about middle class professional women having to make their selfish choice.

And this author found a publisher how?

I don’t know how many girls are still railroaded into having abortions by parents. One of the more dusturbing passages in the Charles Schulz biography Schulz and Peanuts by David Michaelis ( and probably the reason several of his children disliked the book) is the passage in which the eldest daughter has an unplanned pregnancy and her mother, Schulz’ first wife took her to Japan for an abortion( this was in the 60s.) The implication was that Schulz and even the daughter, Meredith herself, were more or less helpless bystanders since the first Mrs. Schulz was a very pushy, stubborn woman, probably the reason that there was a divorce and a second Mrs. Schulz a few years later.
I think that the business of boyfriends forcing women to have abortions is becoming more common now that abortion is a more accepted part if the culture, just a hunch on my part. Now they can’t tie the girl up, throw her in the car and drag her into the abortion clinic, much as they mught want to. How it happens is mental and emotional pressure. I went through this and wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. The way I was raised, when somebody says no about something like that, you take no for an answer, but this guy was different. He acted as if he was incredibly spoiled and not getting his own way was not an option. I was 20 and it was my first major experience with people who didnt have a similar upbringing as I did in a small, conservative Montana town. I ended up having a miscarriage, maybe from stress—it’s impossible to know. But it was one of my first experiences of how incredibly hard life can be and how cruel people can be. I never married or had any other children. So the subject of men and abortion has always interested me.
Back to celebrities, as most of you probably know, there have been stories for years that both Bob Segar and Clint Eastwood forced girlfriends to have abortions. It used to spoil their music and movies for me, not so much any more. There was also a story like that about George W.Bush.

Abortion is very selfish. It is the murder of a child for convenience, nothing else.
