Word For The Day, Tuesday May 27, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
otiose [oh-shee-ohs, oh-tee-]
1. being at leisure; idle; indolent.
2. ineffective or futile.
3. superfluous or useless.
[178595; < Latin ōtiōsus at leisure, equivalent to ōti ( um ) leisure + -ōsus -ose1 ]
el camino [kah-MEEN-oh]
path, road, journey, way
Este camino conduce a una playa solitaria.
This road leads to a secluded beach.
Come and get it.
In one of my favorite TV shows, Fr. Brown on PBS, one of the characters insulted another by referring to her as “decorative”. She could have used the word “otiose” instead.
Our otiose dear leader does nothing except follow the orders of his puppet masters and golf.
Bath house barry is both otiose and odious.
Obama: corrupt, otiose
Keeps his advisors real close
From Valerie Jarrett
To Carney (the parrot)
We get lies in a big adult dose
Just when I think I’m ready to relax, I find out there’s a test for it.
Due to otiosity, I failed to post a thread yesterday. Totes forgot.
cruel and unusual! ; )
Good Lord - that is an insane relationship!
Wasn’t there a song that starts like this?
By the dawn’s early early light ....
Good morning - we took a quick trip to visit family for Memorial Day. Got flowers and flags on the family graves and got home yesterday in time for a storm and some minor flooding in the area. We got over 4 inches of rain and more overnight (I forgot to empty the rain gauge).....more on the way. I love rain!!!
Maybe “the beast” is our government? Cashless means they know everything we do - they could deny purchases for alcohol or what Moosie determines to be “junk food”. they could deny donations to Christian or Conservative entities..... indeed scary.
God, that # annoyed the crap out of me this weekend. gutless, whining snots.
there was a HILARIOUS pic of the bubbaloon with his arm outstretched with that # that totally made me roar though, did you see that?
Yes, I did.
And yes, it was annoying. I mostly stayed out of it, but did have to get myself called “part of the problem” once. LOL
I never get involved in those things bc I want nothing to do with the nutjobs. OMG he was a nut, and how much of a nut must he have been in order for him to actively repel wannabe CA sluts who would be attracted to his flashy car and famous Hollywood dad? a HUGE ONE.
that was sooooo perfect!
En el camino to confront the Wicked Witch of the West,
the protagonists encounter her rather O-TI-Ose castle guards ...
The youngest watched the Lego movie last night and said it was very good.
It is cloudy and 67-and I smell trash burning somewhere close, which always raises the hair on my neck-trash service only costs $30.00 per month out here, but an unattended fire that gets loose in these woods is going to cost the person responsible 10’s of $1000’s in fines...
To say that Obama is otiose
Just seems so understated
When everything he attempts
Is so vastly overrated
If he plays a round of golf
His minions say he’s thinking-
And pour themselves another cup
Of the koolaid they’re drinking
Obama himself said he’s lazy,
Said that is the Hawaiian way-
As soon as he’s out of office,
Hopefully he goes there to stay...
Camino de Obama conduce a un futuro en Hawaii...
We got over 6 inches of rain here in less than 24 hours-looks like it will stop long enough to let me chase all the leaks here...
It looks like here in Texas we are reasonably prepared if it all goes boom, according to the predictions for the primaries today...
high 70s and sticky here. I just made it back in from lunch before a deluge started. Yea, me!
AMC ran a marathon of “Turn” on Sunday and I taped it. I’ve watched the first two episodes. It’s good.
It is a good series. I watched it again.
We continued our new tradition of going car shopping on Memorial Day. The wife's 2008 Rondo was starting to show its age and was out of warranty now.
We're picking up a Cosmic Blue Mitsubishi Outlander tonight. It's got lots of features without having to pay extra. I was a little leery of the brand and the CVT transmission, but they seem OK.
It's got AWD with different selectable modes, including one for snow. Heated seats and mirrors. Touchscreen radio controls with voice activation, USB and Bluetooth. And a backup camera and fog lights.
Pretty standard crossover SUV looks:
Haha - good way to look at it! Yes the Tea Party is alive and well in Texas
My guys are watching that - I will eventually but watch some other shows and just havent’ gotten to it
Oh that sounds nice! In your area the 4WD is needed for sure! I do like the idea of all of the voice activated stuff so you can watch the road instead of fiddling with buttons!
I like “Turn”-I watched most of the marathon.
Speaking of series-the 3d season of “Longmire” starts on Monday, June 2 on A&E. I don’t know what time, but probably the same 9pm as before. I really like mysteries, so I like the series-I’ve also started buying and reading the books.
Right now, I’ve just started reading Ira Levin’s “This Perfect Day” again, to remind me how dangerous feel-good prescription drugs are, and how bad liberal/communist utopia would REALLY be...
I don’t ever want to see it like in the book I’m reading-the more a candidate is against government intervention, higher taxes and regulation, and for personal liberty and responsibility, the faster I’m voting for them-the Karl Roves just want to take us there at a slower pace...
It’s got an “Eco” button in case I want to accelerate more slowly and reduce the output of my A/C. I don’t really see that getting much use. LOL
Thanks for the reminder. We like Longmire here too. It seems like so long ago when the season ended.
looks nice! pretty color too.
Yeah, we were looking at a similar blue last year with my Sportage, but went with the grey.
The blue will look dirty more easily, but will look good when it’s nice and shiny.
Have you seen the new Highlander? Someone at work has one. Looks like a big Ford Escape. Not saying that’s good or bad, but it definitely looks different than the previous models.
I read a good book over the weekend called the Monster of Florence. it’s non-fiction, actually, but written by a writer of mystery thrillers [douglas preston], so it was a page turner. the amazing consequence of reading this book is that I have TOTALLY changed my mind on the foxy knoxy case. I was absolutely positive of her guilt beyond any doubt, but reading about the Italian justice system, I was just floored. And this book is not ABOUT Amanda knox at all!
I have not, but xshub mentioned that they had a very different look to them. I guess it’s more square or something, he said?
well the Escape changed to a much softer rounded appearance. my SIL has one and it’s much squarer than that, forget when they got theirs. And both look somewhat similar to the smaller lexus.
Prior to that it looked like this:
Haha - yeah that is what every driver wants, slower acceleration! lol
