The girl who survived rabies is about 15 year old, Jeanna Giese, from Wisconsin in the USA, who survived rabies thanks to an innovative and desperate treatment tried out on her by Dr. Rodney Willougby.
His technique involved putting her into a deep coma allowing her body to begin an antibody response to the disease that let Jeanna gradually regained normal function. Subsequent testing of the same technique did not have such good results.

I remember quite a few years ago, a boy in Mexico survived rabies. If I recall correctly they put him in an oxygen chamber.
Impressive. Wonder how she’d do if bitten by a liberal.

“Giese’s treatment regimen has since undergone revision (the second version omits the use of ribavirin). Two of 25 patients treated under the first protocol survived. A further 10 patients have been treated under the revised protocol, with a further two survivors.”
Pretty amazing considering no one survives. I hope they keep improving it...I’m sure smart, caring doctors will keep trying. Horrible disease.

I guess not technically a current update, but interesting to see...must have been made a couple of years after the event. Maybe 2006, 2007? Would like to see how she is now in 2014.
It has been a long time and I just saw an article in a newspaper but I do remember the high pressure oxygen chamber.
I have never heard of one being used since then.
More recently I have read that some think Edgar Allan Poe died of rabies.
I just found this about another girl in 2011. I didn’t realize that they had used this treatment protocol successfully in others. Very neat to know.

I am not sure what they thought killed him. I do know it has been said that he was passed out drunk but I have never actually looked it up.
I’ll have to look it up about Poe.
