MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) -- About four years ago, the Google team trying to develop cars driven by computers - not people - concluded that sooner than later, the technology would be ready for the masses. There was one big problem: No state had even considered whether driverless cars should be legal.
And yet this week, Google said it wants to give Californians access to a small fleet of prototypes it will make without a steering wheel or pedals.
The plan is possible because, by this time next year, driverless cars will be legal in the tech giant's home state.

Yeah right now with the old fashioned bio computers operating them we hose 50000 people a year. Idiots driving drunk, texting, yaking just plain day dreaming and just good old fashioned STUPID. I don’t think Google can actually make it any worse....
Looked up jimsonweed recently. Even on the hardcore drug user threads, every single person that it’s a really bad idea to even try the stuff. Guaranteed bad trip, apparently. No recreational benefit.

A human CAN make a better decision, but they often don’t. How many times do you see people turn into a street without enough opening? Go too fast for conditions? Tailgate? Blow through signs and lights? Not to mention all the non-driving things they do to make themselves bad drivers: drinking, texting, cellphoning. A big part of the problem is that we take driving for granted, when we’re fully engaged and analyzing the situation and using our skills we’re very good drivers. But 99% of the time behind the wheel we aren’t those things, we’re going through the rote motions, thinking about work, or dinner, or the spouse, or just zoning out. How often do you get home from work and realize you don’t remember ANYTHING about the drive home? How engaged do you think you were during that time? Could you have avoided a bad situation? Are you sure you didn’t make a bad situation?
Computers don’t have any of those problems.

I’m totally on board for it. And generally I’m not an early adopter, but I see so many upsides to this. The biggest is that I’m starting to get a bit old for drives up to Phoenix for concerts, the drive is starting to hurt the next day is getting rough. Gimme a self driving car and the drive is an opportunity to sleep before getting to bed. And even for not cross country, wanna eat at that restaurant across town but oh that drive... oh wait never mind let the car drive sit back and relax. And who wouldn’t rather spend the daily commute reading? I am very much on board for the self driving car.

I am sorry, citizen. I cannot do that. According to IRSlink you still owe $750 in back taxes for 2013 and you only have $770 in your Citcount. It would require $63.22 of gasoline for the trip according SATlink and you taxes must be paid first before you are permitted to do that.
Think I’m kidding? Look at where we are today compared to 2007. It could happen...
