Marilyn Monroe was 5'5", 115lbs, 35-22-35. Nina Agdal, one of the SI swimsuit cover models this year is 5/9", 121lbs, 34-23-35. They are effectively the same proportions, except that Agdal is 7% taller and 6% heavier.

Those actually are not the same proportions when height and weight increase by the same ratio. To take an extreme, think about a 6' tall man at 200 pounds, and a 3' tall child at 100 pounds. The adult may be reasonably proportioned, while the child is severely obese. The correct proportionate weight for Nida Agdal to match Marilyn Monroe's shape would be roughly 138 pounds at 5' 9" tall (1.0615^3 * 115 . . . actually not quite true for technical reasons; 134 pounds is a better match, but in either case, Nina is proportionately significantly slimmer).

weight should increase by the square of the height. If they were proportional, the taller model should weight about 132 pounds.

Maybe weight should increase proportional to the cube? No time to think about it now.

MM was of average height, with a below average waist and an above average bust.

Think of it like this: a bust to waist ratio of 35:22 is 1.6, vs. the average ratio which was 33:24.5 or 1.35.

That's a 20% variance in the ratio which, to a normal male observer is . . . eye-catching.

Ladies, you are not “curvy”. The Sports Illustrated models are curvy. The Victories Secret models are curvy. You are fat.

Helen Mirren, age 22, in 1967:

A bit of fat on a woman is normal, healthy, and highly attractive.

True. Even with the rolls and ripples photoshopped out, they are still just just overweight.

When they are that skinny, their curves come from a surgeon and a good photoshop artist.

These are fair points.

These are nothing if not three dimensional calculations.

The variable here is the bust, for which MM was proportionately larger.

If Agdal had that, she would still probably be 7lbs or so underweight compared to MM.

Yes, very sad. So called plus size models are what women looked like and were cherished 50 years ago. Marilyn Monroe would be plus sized by our standards. Non-plus models are essentially flag poles.

No, when they talk about "plus size", these days, THIS is what they mean:

These women are clinically obese.

I agree. A size 12 is considered plus size and that is the average size of most women.
