Census: Fewer Americans looking to move

Fewer Americans are looking for a new address than they were a decade ago, the Census Bureau said Thursday.

New data showed more than 1 in 10 Americans moved between 2012 and 2013 because of job-, family- or housing reasons. More than 35 million Americans changed residences, meaning that 11.7 percent of the country over the age of 1 had a new address during that time period.

But the last time they asked, the Census Bureau found more than 42 million people found a new home between 1998 and 1999, a mover rate of 15.9 percent. …

Until 2004 the only reason I ever moved was to take a better paying job. In 2004 I realized the business model of the company I worked for was failing and the real estate bubble would burst. I sold my house for more than twice what I owed and moved across town to the bad side. I now live in a doublewide in the woods that is paid for. I lost the job and there are no jobs out there for me now.

One of my friends moved to Virginia to be closer to their kids and his job. They were unable to find any moving company that would pack their stuff for them and move it and the number of moving companies was much smaller than in the past. Another unintended consequence?

Things are going to get interesting...like they did in CT if the House passes House Bill 4121 to the Senate. Among other hair-brained idiocy it contains a section that requires an affidavit before renewal of a CCW permit that states which guns a person owns, has purchased or sold since last issuance of said permit.

I found it amusing, several months ago, one of the “talking points” being published around was that many people are not taking all of their vacation time, and when they DO, they are not traveling. The commentary was that people are being selfish to not use all of their vacation time and to use it to travel, so that they would be spending money to help the economy.

Clearly, those in DC are WAY out of touch about what people have available to “spend”. Probably also overlooked was the fact that some workers are skipping their vacations due to worries about losing their jobs if they want to exercise the luxury of a few days off.

In the past if people wanted to work they might have to move, but as time goes by and the price of gas goes up and socialism creeps in more and more they are just as well off to sit on their butt and draw welfare.

When you walk into most stores, they are ghost towns. No way they’re making enough money to even pay the utilities and the property taxes (in profit). They’re turning inventory if possible.

Yeah, I work at a major department store and there are days we are dead. There are other days we are busy too, here in the Pittsburgh area, we've took our hits but overall, we are one of he few places that are better off economically for now. Still, it is hard getting people to open a credit account, I see a lot of people using debit cards or plain cash. WE have lots of sales too. We have too may people chasing too few dollars, unless we change course economically, we are like a huge colony of ants fighting over the shrinking supply of meat on a carcass.

Frankly, I can’t think of a SINGLE private-sector job that I would consider “stable” over 30 years. A young person would be STUPID to buy one unless possibly they got a fabulous deal on a fixer-upper and knew how to fix it, and darned few do.
