Should we ban Christmas? Telling children the myth of Santa Claus could damage them, claims...

Fairy tales and believing in Father Christmas could cause children harm.

This is according to controversial biologist Richard Dawkins who warned an audience at the Cheltenham Science Festival about the dangers of make-believe.

In typically incendiary style, Dawkins suggested it was 'pernicious to instil in a child the view that the world is shaped by supernaturalism.'

The 73-year-old acknowledged that the appeal of fairytales lay in their magic but believes they may be causing more harm than we think.

He also questioned whether we should let children believe in the myth of Father Christmas at all.

'Is it a good thing to go along with the fantasy of childhood?,' he said. 'Or should we be fostering a spirit of scepticism?.'

Speaking about his autobiography ‘An Appetite for Wonder’, childhood formed a large part of the talk as he recalled his first eight years growing up in Africa.

Dawkins suggested it was 'pernicious to instil in a child the view that the world is shaped by supernaturalism.'

So he doesn't want them hearing about Wiccans, global warming, socialism, Barack 0bama's exceptional competency, and other liberal myths?

"CS Lewis used to pulverize guys like Dawkins in debate all the time."

Funny that you mention Lewis. When I saw the thread title, my first thought was of the Christmas ban in Narnia. It did not turn out well for Jadis...

But I bet he would have no issue with show kids video of a bunch of homos kissing each other.

Sillyness is a good thing.
I find people aren’t silly enough these days. Everyone seems so serious and concerned and earnest, even to the smallest kids. Glee and foolishness while relating to little children, and even big ones, is right and proper.

Richard Dawkins who warned an audience at the Cheltenham Science Festival about the dangers of make-believe.

It's okay to play make-believe by castrating a little boy whose parents have convinced him that he wants to pretend to be female, and putting him on estrogen for life, but it's not okay to draw his attention to the birth of Jesus Christ? I can see why the typical leftist would take that position, but I can't see how a loving parent could believe it.

See the book “Santa, are you for real?” by Harold Myra.

The Bishop referenced in the post is the Bishop of Myra - Santa Claus

Defense of faith always carries the risk of being ridiculed, so that’s not a big problem. But just to state the truth, belief in the sprit of Christmas is not stupid. It might be to you, but it’s stupid to get in and ruin it for kids.

And, by the way, looking at the article, fairy tales are the basis for just about every good and memorable story, as formula.

Could have some validity.

Just look at what happened to America when the idiots fell for Barack Obama and his Hopey-Changie fairytales.....

Very true!

The interesting little tidbit on atheists is that they have a religion too (they’ll never admit to it—but if you look close enough, there it is).

Atheists worship the Satanic God of SELF.

As a Christian, I agree with Dawkins that the myth of Santa Claus can be harmful to children.

Christmas is safe. Way, way too much money to be made for a liberal crackpot to eradicate.

although I like most others love Christmas, I have often questioned whether it’s a good thing to associate a lie with the greatest truth in history. I sometimes wonder if children will come to the conclusion that Christ is a fairytale just like Santa, that parents lie to kids about for their own good.

finding out that mom and dad were santa clause never ruined my world. in fact, it gave me a deeper appreciation and love for who they were and the sacrifices they made for our family.

Oh geez. Yes Santa is real, but not the way you described. If you look at history, you will see the stories of Santa and his elves, and they start looking suspiciously like something else.

Jesus doesn’t need any help, he’s Jesus. He’s our intercessor, he’s the one who was born as a man and later died for our sins. A lot of this other stuff is designed to distract from that. I know many won’t agree with me, but I choose to follow God’s word, not some concocted stories.
