Arizona neighborhood terrorized by feral packs of abandoned CHIHUAHUAS

They may be small and cute, but packs of stray Chihuahuas have been wreaking havoc on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control says last year alone it received 6,000 calls from the Maryvale section of Phoenix about abandoned Chihuahuas roaming the streets in the neighborhood and scaring children.

‘We compared the number of calls we got in 2013 from that area to similar areas in town and the calls from Maryvale were three times higher than surrounding areas,’ said Melissa Gable with MCACC. ‘Part of it is these animals aren’t spayed or neutered, so they’re out looking for a mate and are having babies, which also contributes to the problem.’

If you want low velocity .22 then just buy .22 shorts.

Agreed.
Every time I see a stray dog wandering a neighborhood near busy streets, I know what’s going to happen.
Makes me sick.

Or you could just a .22 cal. air rifle, probably no louder than a suppressed .22.

When I was a kid, I had a Remington model 514 which was my Christmas Present at age 9. My brother had a far, far better Remington model 513.

I have no idea why but the model 513 which had dual rear locking lugs and was a sweet shooter, was always quieter than my model 514.

I don’t think it had anything to do with the sound but the model 514 just used the bolt handle for lockup. It was never real accurate and was twice as loud as my brother’s gun.

I have an RWS Diana model 48 air rifle in .177 caliber. It shoots 1200fps with normal pellets.

I imagine it is louder than a suppressed .22 tho I don’t know that for a fact. It would do the job on any animal that size.

You just pick them up and twist their little heads around like removing a light bulb from a socket...easy, peasy.

Wouldn’t a baseball bat, or even a tennis racket, take care of the problem? Geez, must be a bunch of wusses in that neighborhood.

I have noted for years that the local shelters are loaded with chihuahuas, second to pit bulls.

We have adopted 2 chihuahuas. They take a strong owner, just like many other breeds. But we thoroughly enjoy them too.

One of them is silent for the most part; he sasses me for food and to be let in or outside. The other one is a chatter, but the friendliest dog. Loves people, loves cleaning noses as a greeting.

I agree,
Wasting 22lr rounds on feral yapper dogs is insane, it’s darn near impossible to buy those these days.

I’d go with a Stahl weed wacker with the heavy cable

Save the cable, save teh ammo.

Messicans eat those dogs. That may be why they are such nasty beasties - they know their place and fate.

So, why stand in the way of fate?

Call some Messicans. They will end that mini-mutt problem.

Someone told me that a chihuahua was a self-defense dog, used for protection. Hair-trigger anger, very willing to bite (ankles), and a huge distraction if you intend to harm the owner. I can’t verify the truth in that, but having known several of these ill-tempered yappers, there may be truth in that.

Importing Burmese Pythons from Florida might do the trick, if you can get rid of the pythons when the dogs are gone.

I got a FIREPOWER magazine from the 1980s in which a 2 liter soda bottle was placed over the barrel of a .22. It worked so well a manufacturer came up with a cheap connector.

Then the BATF demanded it be taxed out of existence.

Also, must use subsonic ammo.

They’ll stand up to a Great Dane or any other large dog.

Funny you would say that. I once rescued a roaming Great Dane in Maryvale Park (in the area mentioned in the article). Big harlequin, very friendly. It had tags. The people in the park were leery of it because of its size, but I've dealt with them before and they're big puppies.
