A startled carriage horse took a jaunt around Central Park without any passengers or its driver.
The horse became detached from its bridle on Monday evening and ran into the Manhattan park, following its usual route, the union that represents carriage drivers said. It was unclear what startled it. [ ]
Advocacy agency NYCLASS, which is seeking to end the carriage horse industry, released a statement saying carriage horses and city streets dont mix.
Its time to retire the carriage horses and replace them with something that doesnt spook or dart dangerously through traffic and pedestrians, it said.

They also don’t text and drive, or fard, or drive with their knees so they can hold a breakfast sandwich and coffee at once.
Are they going to also ban those delivery boys on bikes that I always hear about?
We also need to replace that sweet 125 yr. old. Horse barn complex, on prime Central Park border real estate, with some political donor’s campaign contribution payback for a new condo complex. /sarc

YES! Ban this cruelty NOW! Retire ALL of these anachronisms to the glue factory! This day and age, there is no need to have these road apple factories in our midst! Let them ride Segways! /sar
The idiots seem to believe that, if banned, the horses will just munch in a pasture, for free; be groomed and medicated for free; and be kept in a 3-room stall during the winter for free.
They have no concept of the cost of care & upkeep for these animals, and don’t really care, as long as somebody else pays for it.
(If #10 seems familiar, it is: I wrote it to irritate them; thought for sure it would be moderated off the site.

Proof how much the horses enjoy their work. Hell, they’ll perform their usual route without any passengers or prompting!
This reminds me of when New York City quit using horse-driven fire carts, and replaced them with fire trucks.
They repurposed the horses to augment their stable used for waste and garbage collection.
That went fine initially, but they soon foound out when the lead horses heard fire bells clanking, they tended to want to run toward the bells and/or fire.
