A KITTEN has almost died after its owners fed it a strict vegan diet.
The horrific case at a North Melbourne animal hospital has prompted a warning about the dangers of people "forcing ideologies" on their pets.
Lort Smith Animal Hospital veterinarian Leanne Pinfold said the kitten was brought in this month by its owners, who were believed to be vegan.
She said the kitten's diet of potatoes, rice milk and pasta had caused it to become critically ill.
"It was extremely weak and collapsed when it came in. It was almost non-responsive," Dr Pinfold said.
The kitten was given fluids via a drip, placed on a heat pad and fed meat.

My cat of 10 years will eat nothing but Friskies Surfin Turfin. When she was a kitten she ate canned cat food but one day turned her nose up at it. I gave away a dozen cans of expensive cat food. Shes in very good health, very active and not at all fat.
Until a week ago she showed no interest in people food, not even real meat. I had made a pizza. It was hot from the oven and I use a lot of crushed red pepper. She decided to check it out. She snuck up on the pizza and gave the sauce a taste. Her tongue picked up a couple flakes of pepper, she shook her head and swatted the pizza a couple times. I doubt shell try it again.
I saw a family like that at Whole Foods. The children were pale and listless. Sad.
“Look at a cats teeth. Those are strictly for a carnivore.”
That’s why a cat looks at you like you’re lunch.
bttt
You might want to go easy on the garlic. It’s not all that harmless to cats, regardless whether they like eating it.

Read the comments. They explain why garlic and other allium vegetables are bad for cats.
However, I understand that a small amount of garlic every once in a great while is good for eliminating fleas.
Is anyone else curious what political position people who think like this hold?
Cats are strict carnivores and do best on a raw meat diet.
Visit the Weston Price website for good diet info, look under “Traditional Diets” heading. Veganism is slow suicide.

That and canned tuna.
“I have a cat who adores mushrooms fried in garlic and butter”
My stepdaughter used to have a cat (may he rest in peace) who loved corn. It was the only thing he would actually beg for.
This is what we feed our three cats; one of them will not eat anything else.
That kitty looks like my beloved kitty who went to the Rainbow Bridge this past December. She was a good carnivore kitty but she loved lettuce. Whenever I made a salad, she would always take a bite. Maybe it helped digestion or kept the fur balls down. I don’t know.
I’d make a gazillion dollars if I could invent a kitteh interpreter, or a gadget that would let me understand a feline brain.
Exactly. Cats can't digest carbohydrates properly. That includes dry food. It's touted as "healthy" for felines, but it's high in carbs and is very likely responsible for many cases of diabetes in cats.
Cats are obligate carnivores! When will some people get it! They don’t need rice in their food. Nor do they need veggies. When was the last time anyone saw a lion eat a carrot? Sheesh...
Absolutely! I had a vet that used to work for Purina or something like it. She helped to develop one of the dry foods. After she became a vet and her own cat got diabetes, she was adamant about not feeding dry food, even the one she created!
I am feeling a little confused right now. I have had dozens of cats and I never fed them anything but dry cat food. They all lived long healthy lives. No diabetics among them.
I didn't say they weren't. I just said that omnivores (such as ourselves) can live on veggies.
Reminds me of the animated sitcom “The Goode Family” - another Mike Judge creation that was quickly canceld (libs sure didn’t like it).
They were a liberal family (drove smart cars, worked for PBS, etc), and they fed their dog vegan food.
When the family went for walks and such, you would see signs on lampposts from people missing their own dogs and cats.
The “Goode Family’s” dog had been attacking all other pets and eating them just for the meat suppliment.
That was only one of the substories within the sitcom that I liked.
Again, I didn't say a cat was not a carnivore.:o)
