Bob Welch, a former Cy Young Award winner and the last Major League pitcher to win at least 25 games in a season, has passed away at the age of 57, the Oakland Athletics announced Tuesday.
Welch, a two-time All-Star who posted a 27-6 record as the Cy Young Award winner on the Athletics' 1990 American League championship team, passed away in Seal Beach, Monday night. Cause of death was unavailable.
"We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Bob Welch," said A's President Michael Crowley. "He was a legendary pitcher who enjoyed many of his best seasons with the Oakland A's. He will always be a significant part of our franchise's history, and we mourn his loss. We send our greatest sympathies to his family and friends."
"This is a sad day for the entire A's organization," said Billy Beane, the A's vice president and general manager. "Those of us who knew Bob as a teammate and a friend will miss him greatly. My condolences go out to his family."

I remember him from his Dodger days. He was damn good.
Welch, as a rookie LA Dodger, fanning Reggie Jackson in the World Series is a classic baseball moment.
Welch had alcohol problems for a while, which is one reason he left the Dodgers. He got cleaned up with the A’s.
This is sad news and I wonder why he died.

As a Bay Area, CA. resident and an Oakland A’s fan, this indeed is sad news. Fifty seven is way too young to leave this world.

I'd venture an educated guess that his death had some connection to his alcoholism. The posted article, for some reason, makes no mention of his well-publicized history of alcoholism. Not many alcoholic athletes have had their problems publicly exposed as much as Welch, who in fact wrote a book about it at one time.
Damn, only 57, much too young. I remember when he first came up with the Dodgers and that greatt season with the As. I am getting old when the ball players of my youth are passing.

Yep, I remember that moment with Reggie Jackson.
As I recall, Jackson fouled off about a dozen pitches, before Welch was able to strike him out. Was Jackson the last out of the game? I remember it was a crucial situation, but don’t remember if he ended the game with that strikeout.

Wrong. I have a friend who knew him and he was in great health and shape. He played a lot of hockey from what I heard.
Sorry to hear of his death. He was a pretty good guy from what I hear from my friends who knew him.
