All this time I thought it was the tobacco that was addictive and not the packaging.

Non-smoker. Don’t like cigarettes. This plainwrap will create a backlash. It is a stupid idea.

It saddens me...and embarrasses me...to see how far down the decency rathole the land of my ancestors has fallen. And how fast and effortless that decent has been.

Cigarette manufacturers should pull out of any country that tries to pull this. Ireland is small enough to be made an example of. People in the United States have been so conditioned by the media and a constant health harangue that they fail to realize, most of the rest of the world smokes like chimneys. The uproar over not being able to get cigarettes at all will shut the whole anti-capitalist notion down in very short order.

The Aussies did this a couple of years ago. Apparently it went well enough (decreased smoking) for other countries to try it.

Actually, it will further open the black market. When I lived in the UK....I used to hand roll (cheaper) and bought my tobacco from a ‘friend’.

I share your ancestry, and often wonder why they put up with this stuff.

Most of the people there seem to have a sort of fatalism, that they don't control their situation. The government (and before that, the church) is treated like fate, they'll do what they will to you and there's nothing you can do about it.

There are plenty like that in this country, but plenty more who resist the mindset, even violently when necessary.

I think all those who of similar mind who were in Ireland boarded boats a hundred years ago, which is a fine option to take charge of your life.

Most people won’t plan that far ahead. Black market will be prepackaged cigarettes sold in other countries. With < gasp! > graphics on them.

I smoked when I was frequently in Ireland. Popular American brands were hideously expensive even then. There was what I thought was an Irish brand that wasn’t bad. Trying to recall the name. Silk Cut? Most everything else was so strong they made my head spin.

Correct; Silk Cut, produced by the Gallaher Group (now owned by Japan Tobacco).

The major Irish tobacco company is P.J. Carroll, who produces brands like Major, Carrolls No. 1 and Sweet Afton.
