Adviser to Pope Francis says Catholicism is incompatible with libertarianism.
This Week ^ | June 12, 2014 | Elizabeth Stoker

An adviser to Pope Francis says Catholicism is incompatible with libertarianism. He's right.

At least by one National Review writer's definition of the free market.

It should come as no surprise that Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga's recent comments on American libertarianism have stirred a bit of a furor in free-market circles. On American zeal for preserving laissez-faire economic systems, the Honduran Cardinal had the following to say at speech on June 3 in Washington, D.C.:

The elimination of the structural causes for poverty is a matter of urgency that can no longer be postponed... The hungry or sick child of the poor cannot wait… Many of these libertarianists do not read the social doctrine of the church. [Religious News Service]

Note that this scum Cardinal’s gripe with libertarians is their desire for free markets, otherwise known as their common ground with conservatives.

Ahh, so it’s no longer the responsibility of individuals to follow their morals and aid their fellows, it’s no longer the responsibility of the Church to provide charity and outreach, it’s the sole responsibility of THE STATE?

I mean, what would better tend to the spiritual health of the faithful, forced taxation and government redistribution or personally motivated giving of alms? Gee, that’s a tough one. All this time I thought it was important to give of myself rather than vote something out of someone else’s pocket.

The Church really needs to remove some of those godless communists and Jesuits (but I repeat myself) from the fold.

It has long been known that strict libertarianism is incompatible with Catholic teaching.

There are a lot of libertarians on FR who are more "pragmatic", but there are a few dyed-in-the-wool libertarians as well who most likely won't give a damn what the Catholic Church thinks about libertarianism.

Most people who have looked at it find that strict libertarianism has some major philosophical inconsistencies and rests upon very questionable assumptions. So it's not just the Catholic Church that has a problem with libertarianism.

At the heart of the argument is a fundamental misconception on the part of the cardinal and the author [and Augustine] that the right to own private property is a creation of government.

There are no rights which are created by government; consequently, the cardinal's position is foolish.

Dear adviser...

One of the things you seem to have misunderstood about faith is that neither God, nor Gods creations require a gatekeeper. We can commune just fine without you.

Signed,

Humanity

Oh, that's an excellent observation that we don't often seen nailed down like that.

Most people who have looked at it find that strict libertarianism has some major philosophical inconsistencies and rests upon very questionable assumptions.

As distinct from the Roman Church, was is founded on myth and is nothing but logical and philosophical inconsistencies.

The philosophical position of this foolish man is that rights are created by government, including the right to private property, and that therefore the government has the right to deprive individuals of the same. But governments do not grant rights, which is something that real Christians understand.

And libertarianism is based on the myth that rational agents capable of managing their economic affairs just magically pop into existence, never get injured, never age, and never lose their mental faculties.

Has anyone asked this Cardinal if socialism and communism are incompatible with Catholicism? Bet you would get an interesting tap dance.

this man, as do many in the Catholic hierarchy here in the USA, support ‘social justice’ - that means equal outcomes for everyone (i.e., misery spread evenly except for the few oligarchs). Witness the current invasion of our country from Central America. Poverty is inflamed by socialist ideology, yet the Catholic church in Latin America doesn’t see the connection (including the current Pope)? Proof is in the pudding. Successful countries are then asked to bail out the failed ones who do nothing substantial to help their people (like set them free and let them own land and enforce the rule of law). Very sad for those people. Not my problem here in the USA - until now with our Traitors in power who have sold us out.

Only a mystic [that is, a person not really grounded in reality] would attribute human existence to “magic.” I certainly do not. As for the rest, it has no bearing on anything sensible, which again is not surprising coming from someone who believes the universe is a haunted house.

And do those facts mean that government has to fix the troubles? Libertarianism has no problem with the voluntary organization that is the Catholic Church addressing those problems. That is, if it's the Catholic Church of the modern age, sans Inquisition and imposed tithing.

No, libertarians believe that social support systems should be generated by the people, not the government. And they further believe that if that were the case, the people woud be so wealthy due to lack of excessive government involvement that such social support would ubiquitous, cheap and efficient.
