Netherlands exact revenge, crush defending World Cup champion Spain 5-1 (Footbol Caucus)

The Netherlands earned sweet revenge on Spain on Friday at the Fonte Nova in Salvador, hammering Spain 5-1 to put an emphatic coda on their loss in the 2010 World Cup finals.

Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben both scored twice, and Stefan de Vrij added one to pace the Netherlands after an early and controversial penalty had staked Spain an early lead. And believe it or not, the Dutch could have had a few more. It was the heaviest loss ever suffered by a reigning champion, and it leaves Spain staring at an early exit.

Spain hadn't lost in a Cup match in such a shambolic fashion since 1950 -- fittingly enough, that was against hosts Brazil.

This was the first group stage meeting between the previous World Cup's finalists in history, a seemingly dry fact belied by the rancor of that game. Then, Spain needed extra time to down a Dutch side that should have been reduced to ten men after Nigel de Jong infamously delivered a karate kick to Xabi Alonso's midsection in Johannesburg, South Africa. That was a dirty show from Holland, and no one had forgot it; the question coming in was whether or not they could overcome that bitter history.

Indeed, they could.

Spain lost their first World Cup game vs. Switzerland last time as well, not by that score though.

Reminds me of when Netherlands whipped Italy in the Euro 2008 but still only went to the semifinals.

A beautiful game. I was amazed at the degree to which Spain collapsed. Going into this game many thought that Spain was the best team in the world, a few even called it the best team in history. Amazing match, felt sorry for the Spain fans. Wish Netherlands was a little less thuggish, they are good players but love to score a cheap shot, the yellow cards were justified.

The bar here was full with over a hundred of people all having an amazing time. Suited professionals on their lunch breaks and dreadlocked hippies, working class whites and immigrants from India/Africa/Mexico. Everyone had a blast, something about this sport just brings people together. This is going to be a good tournament.

5-1 with 11 shots on goal and only 41% possession.
Nice to see Holland playing well ,like they used to.

Spain is getting long in the tooth. They aren't among the favorites for the title. The defense they showed today was pathetic.

The cheap shot of the day was the head butt of the Netherland's Bruno Martins Indi by Diego Costa. Spain will probably lose Costa for a few games or perhaps the tournament.

Hockey: same game only a smaller pitch and less players.

I’m not a fan of either but, I’d rather fall asleep to a hockey game than a Futbal match.

The goal differential from this game alone might relegate Spain to the "whipping class" in the knockout rounds with a possible 1st fixture opponent against Brazil.

The Brazil fans cheering today against Spain and Costa might not like the fact of taking on a pissed-off and embarrassed defending champion who will see a grand opportunity to rebound off the host country right after group play.

I would rather wait longer in the tourney to face Spain. Brazil did not look sharp as well and needed two big helpings of "assistance" to get two deciding goals. The weak placement of the other goal was courtesy of a slow goalie which Casillas certainly is not.

Robben has been playing lights out the past several years with Bayern Munich and van Persie was heating up on the verge of a hot streak with United (After a long slow start) but was grounded due to an injury.

I think FIFA's rating system is out of whack because the Netherlands sure did not look like 15th to me.

Holland clearly wanted it more.

Let's see how Spain reacts to this defeat. Their next game will be very telling.

Great game to watch. Far, far better than the opening game.

“Hockey: same game only a smaller pitch and less players.”

the difference is that in hockey if you fake injury you are assessed a delay of game penalty, in soccer you are awarded a penalty kick

And, remember, everybody else has a stick with which to teach you a lesson.

Silly question, but is the World Cup tournament single elimination? If Germany beats Portugal and the US beats Ghana, does the US have to play Portugal? Or do we go straight to playing Germany?

Personally I never understood how anyone can watch baseball, golf, or American “football”. 99% of the game is milling around, the actual game part of the game is like 3 minutes long, they just stretch it to four hours for commercials. I do not watch that stuff for the same reason I do not watch Curling. Cut out the standing around and give me the 3 minutes of actual gameplay.

I mean I understand American football/baseball as a school activity for kids, gets them away from the XBOX and whatnot, but an adult sport? Seems a little silly.

Hockey, soccer, basketball, NASCAR, atleast most of the game/race people are actually doing stuff.

Yay for American shit, mutilating, played with hands called football?

Rest of the world is stupid, enjoying watching world’s best. Just don’t watch it if it bothers you.

It start out round robin with groups of four (32 teams total) where everyone plays everyone. The two top teams advance. Once there are 16 teams its single elimination.
