This morning at a company meeting in Manhattan, Starbucks billionaire CEO, Howard Schultz, announced that the company would pay for thousands of workers, including baristas who work just 20 hours a week, to get a bachelors degree through Arizona State Universitys online program. The initiative, the first of its kind, will allow many of the Seattle-based companys 135,000 workers to graduate debt-free. Those who already have two years of college credit under their belts, will be entitled to a full tuition reimbursement. Those just starting college will receive subsidies worth an average of $6,500. There will be no requirement that employees who graduate with the program stay on at Starbucks.

Do all the degrees offered end with “-studies?”
The headline says “college education,” but the article mentions ASU. I’d say the headline is a bit misleading... :)
Uh, aren’t most of them there because they got a “college education”?
I wonder where they are getting their money . . . or if the existing B&N Store simply wants to get rid of some of the Starbucks crowd who comes to use their free wireless for hours on end and purchases next to nothing.
I'd guess that at least half of their parking lot is taken up by Starbucks customers whom you seldom see sitting at one of their tables with anything more than a coffee.
I can say, that I have never been in a Starbucks!
may as well... they will just be back as barristas afterwards.
They’ll take art, French, lesbian studies, world ecology, sociology and be back at Starbucks in a flash!!
So long as your last name is not Zimmerman. Then they ask you to leave.
That’s not that unusual. Go to Seattle sometime; the city of 10,000 Starbucks with one literaly on every corner in the downtown area and a Seattle’s Best every mid-block.
Seattle is an open air insane asylum. Greensburg, PA is a respectable mid-sized town.
Kind of shows everyone how over priced their product is. They could just pay their workers more so that could pay for their education themselves but then the employees wouldn’t be owned.
Never been to Greensburg but have made some expo trips to Seattle as well as taking a cruise out of there. Not a place I would choose to live. Nice views but full of really brainless new and old hippies.
They would not sell their coffee to those wishing to
send it to G.I.’s overseas; they wrote a “please keep
your gun out of our stores” letter; they embrace the
homosexuals; and they think the American consumers
should be overjoyed with this college thing???
Fie on thee, starbucks!
college professor welfare.
the costs of college will not go down if people keep paying the exorbitant fees. especially when they find the “degrees” they “earned” are worthless in the real world.
I was. Once. The taste of burnt coffee is awful. Who can drink that stuff?
