Beaver Savagely Attacks Kayaker
Newser ^ | June 17, 2014 | Evann Gastaldo

"A kayaker in Upstate New York was hospitalized after being attacked by a beaver in Irondequoit Creek last week. Michael Cavanaugh was knocked into the water when the beaver jumped out of the creek and started mauling him, biting him on his back and arm. "I heard my name called out from the shop and I ran out the door to see a guy getting pulled into the water," a trainer at BayCreek Paddling Center tells WHAM. "It was like watching a horror film." Cavanaugh was able to get to the dock, but the beaver wouldn't let go, so the trainer started hitting him with a paddle until the paddle broke and the beaver finally retreated."

There was a disagreement. The guy was using kayak, and the beaver liked priceline better.

“Best to avoid the nasty beavers, but how is one to tell?”

The smell is one way, probably the first and most noticeable way. Also.....warts. Run away fast.

A smelly, warty beaver is not anything you would want to play with.

Someone might be tempted to say something about being downwind, but someone might get banned.

"Rabies?"

"Cavanaugh is being treated for rabies as a precaution—experts say beaver attacks on humans are rare, and most are either a result of rabies or a beaver trying to protect its offspring"

It's a possibility that the beaver had rabies. The treatment is very painful, but it's preferable to death.

I think Mrs. Cleaver would be concerned that the trainer was being too hard on the beav.

The treatment is very painful ...
IIRC, they updated the treatment(s) many years ago, to be no worse than a flu shot.

Then there’s the story about a drunk sailor at the bar with a girl, and he thought, well you know, it turned out to be something else when he went exploring. Strange things happen in the animal world.

not far from me - the creek is not particularly wide - mostly 20-30ft ...its a feeder to Irondequoit bay and is North flowing like the Large Genesee in nearby Rochester

both are know for nasty beavers in kayaks ;)

I worked at a County park about 25 miles south of there as a teen...the same creek flowed through that park - we'd see lake run salmon & trout run that far in during the spring runs

all the beavers in the park were extremely hot in the summer....many driving around girls gone wild style

Poor little Beaver. He’s probably just told his mom he killed a kayaker. She told him to wait until his father gets home!

I agree, but sometimes you have to settle for what you have. A beaver in the hand is better than two beavers in the bush.

It's a possibility that the beaver had rabies.

I've never heard of a beaver starting a fight.

Rabies should be assumed until you can rule it out, imo. Despite the advances claimed for coma therapy- it's still assumed to be 100% fatal. The girl who was successfully treated had actually received preliminary treatment before her infection developed fully, so many attribute that to her survival. Treatment is less painful now than before.

Incidence of infection in animals seems to be on the increase--it seems to be cyclic, almost a sine curve when charted graphically.

Stories like this are good reminders: once the disease fully develops, you die and in unspeakable agony.
