b>Word For The Day, Friday, June 20, 2014 – flummox

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

flummox; verb (used with object) Informal. to bewilder; confound; confuse. 1837, cant word, origin uncertain, probably from some forgotten British dialect. Candidates cluster in Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, southern Cheshire and also in Sheffield. "The formation seems to be onomatopoeic, expressive of the notion of throwing down roughly and untidily." Never let it be said that the OED editors lacked imagination. Related: Flummoxed. •

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

well there is a guy running it today who seems far more organized. At 8 am there were STILL about 12 people in front of us [we asked the guy at the head of the line what time he got there and he said 6;45 am!] in line. The USPS employee in charge today [my guess is they take turns manning the passport ofc side] took the names of the first ten people who elected to stay and wait their turn and gave the rest of us the option to return. So we will go back at 11:30 am. i live 2 min from the Merrifield PO, so this was convenient to be able to come back home to wait. I am hopeful this will be more orderly and efficient, but we will see.

I will be completely flummoxed if Hitllary is elected, of course I will just as flummoxed if the GOP actually has a viable candidate.

xsboy was awakened this AM, he said, by some drilling right outside his window. He asked me what the drilling sound was, i said um... a woodpecker. He said it went all around the house at various points, drilling.

Obama often pretends to be flummoxed in knowing about his own incompetence.

Side note: learned of the word ‘onomatopoeic’ as well.

think so. haven't looked at the deed since we bought 15 yrs ago and then wasn't looking at mineral rights.

Property rights for underground minerals (such as oil, natural gas, coal, and coal bed methane) are based initially on surface ownership. When the colonial government first sold land to private property owners, all property rights transferred with the deed. Ownership of the surface and ownership of the minerals underneath the surface were united.

Notice the language now?

The illegals went from illegal aliens to undocumented to undocumented immigrants!

I’m betting Ti will be back with us all sooner than expected with bells on...

There is no rhyme or reason
To hearings on the IRS-
Every taxpaying citizen
Is flummoxed by the mess

Feigning injured innocence
Today, when under attack
Didn’t work well when so few
Were willing to give any slack

A massive lack or credibility
Is now coming home to linger-
And I’m all for that payback-
Giving IRS the middle finger...

it is depressing, i know what you mean. for today i am gratified that the passport ofc was an orderly and expeditious process. The AMERICAN middle aged man in charge of it today, cut off the standby list and had us go back at 11:30, we were done and out of there at 11:38 and there were only a handful of people in there, instead of what could have passed as a marketplace in the middle of Mumbai, the last time.
