Roma tomato harvest from 4 plants. I weighed them - 15 lbs total! I want to try making making my own tomato sauce to use for recipes. Canning in a hot water bath should be okay since tomatoes are acidic.

Any hints/tips and recipes would be much appreciated. This will be my first time trying this. If it's successful, maybe next year I'll plant 10 Roma tomato plants.

Johnny - I thought I read previously that you grow a lot of Roma tomatoes?

Sorry to have taken the the garden thread off in another direction ... but that is what this thread has always done ... wanders all over the place ... at the whim of each FReeper. It is a good thing and FReepers have always enjoyed the wandering.

I only grow romas. I think I have 22 this year. I would give you a recipe for sauce but I’m on a tablet over at my daughters.

I also make tomato powder from my romas. It’s like dehydrated tomato paste. Great in soups and other recipes.

Hello RD . . . the birds deposit Chile Petin seeds all over my 1 acre garden, they come up everywhere. I make a pepper sauce vinegar with them, Hubby loves to shake it on cabbage and broccoli. I also put a few in Chili and such.

Chili Vinegar:
1 clean malt vinegar bottle with a shaker spout.
About 1 inch of Chile Petins in bottle.
Pour hot white vinegar over peppers and fill to the top.
Let sit a couple of weeks and you’ve got a great hot vinegar sauce . . . Enjoy!

The only advice I have is when you blanch your tomatoes to remove the skin do it for only 10 to maybe 20 seconds at most in rolling boiling water and cool them in an ice bath right away. The skin will slip right off.

Add a little lime juice to the jars you use for canning and you will be successful. they should keep for years.

Go for growing more tomatoes!

Going to my house tomorrow to check on house and plants. Large containers will be moved to north of Dallas and others moved based on space and condition of plants. No matter where I am, there will be a container garden.

Will report on condition of plants.

Yes, I enjoyed looking the the stained glass windows once and also at the carousels another. And recipes are always good here, cooking is a natural fit with gardening.

We’ll be going to the next town over for great grand daughter’s birthday party. Probably hit Lowes, Farmers Market and maybe super Walmart while we are there.

I’ll be looking forward to hearing your next report. Did you make any strawberry preserves, or did you just eat them all?

There were not enough strawberries to can. After more research, I will plant blueberry plants in the ground. The Tyler, Texas, area grows many blueberry plants and I want to check on which are grown there before I decide which to plant.

However in previous years I would have sunflower plants emerge, get to 2 inches or so high, then the next morning they’re all gone.

Had to take a break to fix grand daughter something to eat, and water some plants out doors.

Pulled some weeds out of one of the beds that had nothing planted in in and dug some compost out of the bin to work it in to the bed first. Going to plant some warm weather stuff.

Had to quit before I finished watering. Back, feet, and knees were killing me, but the heat was the final straw. I just can't take the heat. Will cool off and go back later.

I'm cooking a ham and some more bread after that. Will slice up the ham and freeze the slices for use later, and use the bone for ham and beans this weekend.

Grand daughter has a limited selection of food choices. Hubby insists that she be catered to.LOL I am more of a 2 choices for dinner: Take it or Leave it.

Any way Here's the list:
1. Pepperoni Pizza (cheese won't do)
2. Macaroni and Cheese (has to be banquet home made won't do)
3. McDonlds Chicken nugget meal (only way she likes potatoes - no other frys will do)
4. Chicken Vegetable soup(have to watch the veggies-no potatoes and no regular noodles - has to be ramien)
5. Ramien Noodle soup in a cup-take out the dehydrated veggies
6. Ham bacon or beef jerky (sometimes a pork chop)
7. Granny Smith Apples
8. Pancakes and lots of syrup
9. Sometimes Juice
10. Sometimes Peanut Butter

We went through a whole year, where the only thing that she would eat for lunch was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. So I think she burned out on that.

Good news on the figs! I killed more plants with overwatering than I care to admit. If I didn’t have such a heavy amount of Mel’s mix, it would probably still be a problem, but it is nearly impossible to overwater the beds that have that mix.

We have a feral momma cat that roams the neighborhood. She has kittens just about every spring, but lately she has been really good at hiding them.

I see her carrying a squirrel up the hill at the back yard fence where the vacant lot has plenty of bushes and stuff, so I guess she has them out there some where.

Nice thing about the containers, when it rains too much they don’t get water logged. I like the ones that have a resevoir in the bottom especially for this reason.

I usually put a teaspoon of lemon juice in my tomatoes just to make sure that they are acidic enough.

I can the tomatoes, and then when I want a tomato sauce, I just throw together whatever it is I want and cook it down, and the recipe is almost never the same.

I do have some in my canning book though, so I’ll take a look and see what I can find, and let you know later.

This should be right down Johnny’s alley.

I like black berries too. My granny used to make a combo of blackberry and grape jelly from the wild plants on her farm. Then she would give everyone some for Xmas.

I also like to can the black berries in a light syrup. Open a jar, and scoop out a bowl full and float some heavy cream on them. Very delicious snack.
