I’ve always held the notion that if the front of your car (or motorcycle) hits something/anything, then that’s on you

Me too; what if a car was wrecked because the driver said he was avoiding a jogger on the highway. Is the jogger then liable?

if it was on a highway where pedestrians are NOT allowed and broke the law by being there, then yes...
