Then there was my 1949 Dodge Wayfarer Coupe. Basic black. Flathead six, fluid clutch, three passenger, no back seat (my parents approved of that ;-), humongous trunk, 3 on the tree, side vent windows, dimmer switch on the floor, the 'luxury' radio with *gasp* pushbuttons to store your favorite stations (with a vibrator supply - you know when it was time to buy a new vibrator - and no I'm not talking about the kind that Hillary uses - when you turned on the radio and you didn't hear the hummmm) and a neat little scoop located right in front of the windshield that popped up via a lever under the dash to provide ventilation that improved with speed...

It was my drive to college car in the mid 1960's. Wish I still had the car, but it was a casualty of relocating to NY from Ohio in the mid '70s.

I probably have my own photos of it somewhere but they're not digitized. It looked like this:

(If the hot link quits working, here's the url - it's listed on Hemmings for only $49,500.. ;-)

I was looking to update my 1996 Toyota Tacoma back in 2010. I looked online and on the used car lots, as well as the Auto Trader. I looked for almost a year and couldn’t find a newer model I wanted that I could afford. But I kept coming across a 2007 Tacoma online at the same dealership’s used car lot and every so often the price would drop. Over a 6 month period of time, the truck went from $20,000+ to less than $10,000, so I finally decided to drive over to the lot and actually look at the truck and find out what was wrong with it to make the price drop so much. It was a great looking truck with no dents, new tires and only 44,000 miles on it. I ask for a demo drive and found nothing amiss. So I asked the salesman outright, why the drastic drop in price in just 6 months. His response was that it had a manual transmission with crank windows and non-remote locks. He said everyone that looked at the car, back away when told it had a standard transmission. Most people he said never learned to drive a stick shift. But lucky me, it was exactly what I was looking for. I paid cash and got the truck for $9700. It was worth twice that. It’s still a good truck to this day.

Sometimes, less is more when it comes to features in a car. The basic truck was what I wanted when other people didn’t. But it sure was hard to find.

I hear you. It was a brand-new experience to buy what I calculate is probably my last car. Really puts a lot in perspective, no? But there was also a certain freedom in it that I liked very much. I was tempted by the excellent styling of one car which also had a hair-trigger response on the gas pedal, but the steadier accelerator on a different brand’s less attractive model seemed the safer choice, for a nervous old gal whose reflexes are not likely to get any faster. It has taken decades, but common sense has finally arrived!

No typo... it's right around 27,000.

Wow, that is a peachy car!

My daughter’s old Jetta changed the oil all by itself. What a wonderful invention...never had to take it in for an oil change. Simply add one quart of oil with every tank or two of gas.

Never quite understood why you have to push the brake pedal in to move the transmission to drive or reverse.

My son is 23 now and he reminded me a couple days ago of one of the funniest practical jokes I played on him when he was 4 or 5. He was sitting on my lap in the driver's seat in our Ford Expedition and I was showing him how all the controls worked. I surreptitiously put my foot on the brake pedal and put it into reverse, then back in park and took my foot off the brake. I told him he could could put in reverse for me. "Really, Dad!!??" But I kept my foot off the brake and he couldn't budge the shifter. I asked "What's the matter, are you weak?" and then put my foot on the brake and easily slid it into gear. Then I put it back in park and took my foot off the brake. We went another couple rounds and he was getting really frustrated and boiling up, so I finally told him what I was doing. Here we are almost 20 years later and he still remembers it. I think he laughs about it, but I'm not sure.

My lime-green Buick Century had the dimmer/bright switch on the floor.

I recall changing them for about $1.99 for parts and five minutes of my own labor.

Interesting story. When your son has his own son he will do something similar to him and then your grandson will come and tell you about it and you’ll get to laugh about it all over again.

Females have a saying, “Oh my, I’ve become my mother”. Not sure what guys say but the same applies to them.

People can’t afford new cars, so they are turning to used cars, and they are in short supply and prices for a low-mileage used car are not a great amount lower than the price of new

I recall in the 60 s .. hearing car ads promoting Naugahyde interiors .

I wonder if P.E.T.A. was responsible for the demise of Naugahyde........ How many Naugas were slaughtered to build each car ?

I finally got to the article to learn what a “stripper car” is, in this context.

Not bad at all. At the current rate my 2005 Trailblazer will hit around 47,000 miles when it’s the same age as your Dodge Ram.
