Saudi health authorities have warned the public about eating shawarma during summer, saying it could cause food poisoning.
The health ministry said high summer temperatures give rise to bacteria in food prepared outdoors, including shawarma and buffet meals.
Utmost care should be taken when eating such types of food as they could cause poisoning due to the hot weather which causes bacterial growth in the food, the ministry said on its website, according to Ajel newspaper.
It said shawarma and other food sold outdoors are also vulnerable to dust and pollutants during summer more than in other seasons.
Ah heck...just wash it down with camel piss. It’ll be okay.
LOL!!
Did somebody just fatwa?
Given proper refrigeration of the meat, proper cooking, and consuming it directly off the grill, it SHOULD be fine regardless of the temperature.
Then again, we're talking about Arab standards of cleanliness and food preparation...
In theory, they use their left hands in lieu of toilet paper, and wash those left hands thoroughly. In practice, I suspect those nails are not kept as short as they should be, especially in the food prep biz, and washing is less than thorough. Since one-handed food prep is impractical, it's pretty clear why eating street food in those regions is highly risky, especially given the typical lack of nearby toilet facilities.
Never mind, this is Saudi Arabia, not America.
Gosh, why not just sprinkle a little LSD on the Arab food, and watch the fun!
AS for me, if it is not of any Cuisine Americana, I don’t eat it, and anything Arab is on the ‘don’t touch’ list.
Especially if it is shawarma with flies.
Remind me not to go to Saudi Arabia...oh wait, it was NOT on my bucket list. My family and I would NOT be welcome there.
Walked into a meat shop in Sana’a one day and saw a sheep carcass hanging from a hook covered with black dots.
I thought that they were peppercorns, but, upon further investigation, I discovered that they were a million flies.
Is that like sharia?
Gee, shawarma here in NYC at the kosher restaurants is delicious, utterly delicious. I haven’t experienced any health problems with it here, either. No flies, no green, just yum.
What does sharia taste like?
