San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge moved a big step closer to getting an oft-debated suicide barrier after bridge officials on Friday approved a $76 million funding package for a net system that would prevent people from jumping to their deaths.

The bridge district's board of directors voted unanimously in favor of the funding for a steel suicide net. The funding sources are $20 million in bridge toll revenue, $49 million in federal money and $7 million from the state.

... funding for the project remained a major obstacle.

A significant hurdle was overcome two years ago when President Barack Obama signed into law a bill making safety barriers and nets eligible for federal funds.

“76 millioh bucks to save a suicide. I am sorry but once a suicidal lands on a barrier they will just climb over it to finidh the job.

Waste of money.”

Especially since they are Obama voters and thus not really human.

Why?

If someone is so messed up that they want to throw themselves off a bridge and traumatize hundreds of other folks, plus their families, why aren’t they in an institution?

Nevermind, the liberals forced the closure of places where the disturbed could live without affecting the rest of humanity.

If it saves some wayward souls, thats great. Hell, at this point, whats another hundred million on the burn pile.

But they should understand that now they will have constructed a “Dare Devil Wana-be, “ watch this for You Tube” attraction that ail have flocks of idiots trying it out. Then they will need another hundred million annualy to pluck idiots from the nets.

Amazing how people never learn…

I thought DC was a tumor. An anus gets rid of crap, it doesn’t perpetuate it.

There are many ways to commit suicide. Plugging this one doesn't solve the problem, it just moves it.

Follow the money. What exactly is going to prevent jumping from somewhere else? Who got the contract and where will this end?

Suicide, the final solution to a usually temporary problem..

““Feeling suicidal?
Pull red lever and a councilor will be with you
momentarily...””

Well they do have 24/7 hotlines up there and you can’t miss them. But some selfish a-holes have to go out in style, I guess.

I suspect that every kid growing up thinks about suicide at one point (or more), but then quickly washes the thought away. It’s not fun to have parents mad at you, girls (and guys) rejecting you, etc.

Some think it will end there. It doesn’t of course, the families now have to carry that on for decades. Perhaps if we parents and other significant adults EXPLAIN THAT end of it to the kids, they’d understand that jumping off a bridge is basically no different (to loving parents) then picking up a gun and shooting those same parents.

But we don’t - we, instead teach them to recycle.
