Antarctica sets new record for sea ice extent
Watts Up With That? ^ | June 29, 2014 | Harold Ambler

Posted on 06/29/2014 7:05:14 AM PDT by don-o

The sea ice surrounding Antarctica, which, as I reported in my book, has been steadily increasing throughout the period of satellite measurement that began in 1979, has hit a new all-time record high for areal (sic) coverage.

The new record anomaly for Southern Hemisphere sea ice, the ice encircling the southernmost continent, is 2.074 million square kilometers and was posted for the first time by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s The Cryosphere Today early Sunday morning.

The previous record anomaly for Southern Hemisphere sea ice area was 1.840 million square kilometers and occurred on December 20, 2007.

So, as the ice caps on the Antarctic continent melt the surrounding water gets colder and thus more likely to freeze in winter. But since it’s surface ice it melts much more readily in the summer, and meanwhile the land-based ice cap continues to shrink and calve off gigantic bergs, right?

Why the "sic" on areal? It's a legit word. See http://www.yourdictionary.com/areal or Google the term. The link http://theconversation.com/why-is-antarctic-sea-ice-growing-19605 shows the word in context.

I guess Harold hasn't gotten the memo from Rat Party Headquarters. It ceased being called "global warming" about 10 years ago when it became "climate change".So that means that *any* change *anywhere* in the world means that we have to shut down coal mines, commute on bicycles, ground all aircraft (except the ones transporting our "betters") and do without heat in the winter and A/C in the summer.

Big rain storm in the Outback in January? Shut down the coal mines! More snow than normal in Canada in January? Outlaw air conditioning! A cool, breezy day in Singapore? Place a $3/kWh tax on electricity!

Yep, it has been well documented by gov’t scientist that global warming will cause that.

When obama and his admins come out and say the overwhelming majority of scientists assure us that man made global warming is happening, he is talking about, scientist who work for the gov’t and those who receive any type of research grants from the gov’t, and that constitutes the vast majority of scientists.

surface measurement is insufficient. You need total volume AND temperature.

The idea that you can compute a world temperature is absurd. The idea that you can use that absurd data to predict a future temperature is more absurd.

Warm globally, cool locally (especially in the Deep Freeze South)!

Last winter it was very cold in NYS. This summer is very warm. That’s the way it is and that’s the way it will be until God does something spectacular.

You are going to like this winter. The global warming will be fantastic in your area.

Warm globally, cool locally! LOL!

“The idea that you can compute a world temperature is absurd.”

The DMSP spacecraft have been doing it for decades. Every square kilometer, day in and day out. We know for a fact that there hasn’t been any warming but a cooling of a very small degree.

Nope. You can not cool the ocean by warming the air. Basic physics.

Wow! You’re a physicist!! So if the air warms up and that causes a piece of ice to fall off of a ramp into a glass of water at 45 degrees fahrenheit, the ice will not cool that water. FASCINATING!

We are talking about the ocean, not a glass of water with ice cubes. Water in a glass will reach equilibrium with the atmosphere temperature. Even if you melt ice into it. To keep it cold you have to keep putting ice into the glass.

What we are actually talking about is a continent covered with snow and ice that gets no sunlight during the winter, while receiving constant low angle sunlight during the summer. This continent is surrounded by a large ocean that has varying ice coverage.

During winter, all water on land freezes solid, while the surrounding oceans have extensive ice coverage. This is due to lack of sunlight and low atmosphere temperature. The water is at equilibrium with the atmosphere temps.

During summer, sunlight warms the atmosphere and is absorbed somewhat by ice and snow. High albedo prevents extensive adsorption. Eventually the air temps rise and snow and ice on land start to melt.

Now the oceans under the ice are not warming much due to the ice coverage. That water is very cold. As the atmosphere temps rise, some of the ocean ice melts. That in turn allows more sunlight to enter the ocean and warm the water. The Great Lakes are very cold this summer. Not because the prolonged ice cover finally melted, but because the prolonged ice cover prevented sunlight from entering the lakes.

And with regards to ice melting on land, that water will flow into the surrounding ocean and actually quicken the ice melting on the ocean surface. That is because water is higher in temp then ice.

What you are basically trying to state is that global warming is causing more ice around Antarctica. No it does not. Basic physics. You can not get cold from warmth and you cannot get warmth from cold. Especially if you understand that energy is a product of the motion of atoms or their energetic state.
