Why Sunglasses Make Everyone Better Looking
Newser ^ | June 29, 2014 | Matt Cantor

There is, somehow, an instant attractiveness boost conferred by sunglasses. But why is it that covering up our eyes creates this effect? Believe it or not, there is an expert on the topic (it was the subject of her PhD), and UK professor Vanessa Brown explains the situation to Science of Us. The Guardian notes Brown's research spun out of her catching sight of her own reflection one day—walking into a supermarket in scruffy painting clothes but looking, she believed "quite cool," thanks to her sunglasses. That may be because, first of all, symmetry makes us look better, and sunglasses hide asymmetry around our eyes. They also suggest a more attractive bone structure: one that's "chiseled" rather than "soft."

That’s the truth. The best makeover in the world couldn’t improve that black heart.

I'm not a smoker but having a cigarette definitely compounds the sunglasses factor with respect to looking cool. In fact, one would acquire second-hand coolness just standing next to this guy.

I think it's safe to say that Frank Sinatra
would be totally thrilled to meet me.
When you're dead, it would be a thrill to meet anybody.

For actors, sunglasses evolved into a way to hide from fans, but that’s not why they started wearing them.

The earliest movie set lighting was electric rather than incandescent, and it was incredibly hard on film actors’ eyes, rendering them red and sore. The glasses both hid the redness and helped with the resulting photosensitivity to the California sun.

Don’t agree. Beautiful eyes can do a lot to overcome an otherwise unattractive face. If one covers them up ...
