Word For The Day, Monday, 6/3/14
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
rident; adj. laughing; smiling; cheerful.
He flashed her a smile, but she didn't miss the fact that this rident expression did nothing to alter the bleakness in his eyes.
-- Elizabeth George, Deception on His Mind , 1997
Hetty was radiant and rident . It was quite like an evening at home at Oakhurst. Never for months past, never since that fatal cruel day, that no one spoke of, had they spent an evening so delightful.
-- William Makepeace Thackeray, The Virginians , 18571859
Origin:
Rident came to English in the early 1600s from the Latin rīdēre meaning "to laugh."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Larry Nichols is still alive? He used to be on with Jim Quinn all the time back in the day. Lots of stories about Mena airport and all that.
Under what statutory authority? Will they give them a Medicare card just good for those drugs?
poor dead thing. i guess Bobby Womack and Mesach Taylor bit the dust this weekend so maybe a third death coming?
Someday we will live in a world where two male dogs can marry and no one will look at that as weird.....Oh sorry, I watched a lot of HGTV this weekend and there were a LOT of gay couples seeking homes...
Obamacare will provide the authority, that’s part of the evil of it. xshub said he thinks conservatives are over-reading the result here, that it’s based strictly on RFRA and there is no 1st amdt holding, that it’s pretty narrow, but a win is a win.
LOL!!
I saw a post on another forum by a hobby lobby employee stating that from actually job application process you are aware of the values and ideals of the company and this person felt that if you didn’t want to abide by their rules you didn’t have to work there! I just stunned by the ruling - I guess I figured we would get hit again by the turncoat justice!
Exactly Dave!
Well it’s just like Catholic schools. No surprise or mystery about the beliefs of the catholic church, yet you will have people want to work there and contravene them, when the contracts invariably say they must adhere to and live according to church teaching, and then SUE when they have abortions or want to marry same sex partners etc.
it’s bound to elicit a hissy fit from the obams. he’s been getting spanked a bit by them lately.
Of course it’s narrow and limited, but it does delineate a principal. How can they say that religious non profits must comply now?
And does Obamacare give the govt a general power to buy medicine for people?
My usual 6 minute commute wasn't any shorter. I feel cheated.
Glad SCOTUS got it right, WOOHOO!!
Did you hear that HBO is commissioning a new series for Danny McBride (aka Kenny Powers)? In “Vice Principals” he will play, yes, a school vice principal.
If IT WEREN’T SO SAD, MUCH OF WASHINGTON’S BEHAVIOR AND ACTIONS WOULD SEEM RIDENT AND PALTRY; rather than destructive to America’s Constitution and our rights, and freedoms,
OOPS SORRY FOR THE caps!
do you doubt it? Harry Reid has already said that the Dems will make sure it’s covered. That law is so broad you could use it to justify just about anything.
OMG no! That sounds like a show where I will be saying “that just isn’t right” a lot!
Y’all don’t share one hive mind? ;-)
