Guns are completely out of line but the other questions are pretty much standard. I used to volunteer info on my drug and alcohol use to doctors when I did those things. It makes the doctor’s job easier and the treatment more effective.

Reporting it to the state is another matter since it infringes on doctor patient confidentiality.

I agree but you probably expected your privacy to be respected. If I thought they were going to put me into mandatory treatment if some nanny thought I needed it, I might not be so truthful with the Doctor.

Agreed the doctor if he/she is going to treat someone does have a right to ask about drugs and alcohol use. That is common sense as many medications can cause adverse reactions and it's their hides the patient would sue. But all answers should be confidential & released to involved staff only. It's none of the states business.
