He actually died of a heart attack in the pool. The cast helped his body sink to the bottom of the pool. In April, 1974, robbed of a watch and beaten by his mugger in South Carolina when he appeared in Florence as a guest speaker for a meeting of the American Cancer Society. He died three months later.
