We used to use barrels for the rainwater on the roof. Now we have it routed into a swimming pool. We use it for the largest gardens. Hubby put a spigot on the pool near the bottom. So we have gravity irrigation.

we still have some barrels on the down hill side of the house, though so that it is closer to the raised beds, and fruit trees, but have to use buckets to haul it, as he didn’t want to mess with putting on spigots.

I am curious that you know Hebrew and Greek. Did you go to seminary?

I cannot pick out a watermelon in the grocery store, but I do well picking them in the field. You might know this trick already, but I look at the little tendril or curly Q closest to the fruit. If the tendril is green, the watermelon is still green. You look for the tendril to be brown and drying out. I hope this helps...Cantaloupe is a little different - when they are ripe, they will easily fall away from the vine (no cutting or pulling).
happy gardening!

Lord no! That wouldn't have lasted long. I had problems enough trying to not get kicked out of Sunday School. ;)

I learned Hebrew from a Jewish laity leader in the '80s when I was first in the AF. Greek, I had study on my own. Latin was the only one of the classic languages where I had formal education at a school.

I made up a jug of Cucumber Mint Water and I’ve been drinking it for two days. I like it; however the mint in my patch doesn’t have the strongest flavor and I’d like more mint taste. I added a handful to the blender with a cup of water, then strained out the mint and even that didn’t give me what I want. Next year, I’ll plant some better mint. This little patch is from 20 years ago when I had different mints in pots & of course, some escaped by self-sowing. We’ve never cut this one down since it’s in part of a flower bed. The bees and butterflies love it when it blooms, so it’s a garden fixture more than used for culinary purposes. Since I’m allergic to aspertame, I drink SoBe lifewater now and again when I need something with ‘flavor’ .... the Cucumber Mint Water is a decent substitute, a lot cheaper & it used up a cuke or two and we have plenty of them in the garden right now (freezer pickle time!)
