Invading country after country at lightning speed, Hitler's army had Europe terrified during World War Two.

But, as a Nazi soldier's letter has revealed, it wasn't just the Fuhrer's fiery rhetoric which had his troops wired.

Military doctors were handing out millions of pills to the troops known as Pervitin.

The label claimed it was an 'alertness aid' which should be taken 'to maintain wakefulness'. We know it today as methamphetamine, or more commonly, crystal meth.

The Red Army is World War 2 didn’t have meth, so they used vodka instead. 200 ml per frontline soldier was the daily ration.

“Cocaine was well established in Europe for sometime prior to WW2.”

Well established inside FDRs nose too. He was snorting it for a sinus condition.

Well before WWII

By the late Victorian era cocaine use had appeared as a vice in literature. For example, it was injected by Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional Sherlock Holmes, generally to offset the boredom he felt when he was not working on a case.

You can’t really compare users of oral ingested methamphetamine and smoked Crystal Meth.

The difference is the dosage, which is substantial.

Soldiers then, truckers now ... what’s the diff?

When I was a student at the Air War College back in the 1970s, we had a lecture from an outside speaker on "job satisfaction." He had done a lot of research on what jobs resulted in a lot of satisfaction for their holders. According to him, truck drivers had a high level of job satisfaction. Among the things he told us about, though, was the "California Turnaround." Allegedly a pill a driver could take in New York, which would allow him to drive to California and back without stopping to sleep. It was the subject of a lot jokes among the students for the rest of the course.

Are you aware that many, many soldiers do not fire their weapons in combat, and thems that do, miss?

The pep pills are there to make them go forward. It turns out it doesnt really matter if they are good for anything else.

Actually it was cocaine Hitler was given by his quack doctor Theo Morell. Cocaine was well established in Europe for sometime prior to WW2.

Wasn't this the same physician who in the Kennedy years was administering a concoction of feel good to Kennedy? He had issues with his back and Addison's disease.

Five tablets came in a army green waterproof package about 3/4 to one inch wide and about 3 to 4 inches long. They were stuffed in the K-rats and C-rats for both WWII and Korean and Nam.

I saw it on the History Channel, so take it for what it’s worth. They said he had a “treatment” just before he gave his speech about “the day that will live in infamy”.

His coke was prescribed by his doctor, for severe sinusitis.

Morell’s specialty was injections. He was called ''Der Spritzen Miester''("The Injection Master''). One of his concoctions was rumored to be crushed and dried bulls testicles. He also gave Hitler some kind of drug called ''metaflor'', a sedative I think as an antidote for the coke. There was no FDA or DEA in Europe and doctors were known to make their own types of medications.
