Western Pennsylvania thrift shops accept many items — but not guns, skulls

Sex toys, drug paraphernalia, loaded guns and animal skeletal remains are items Western Pennsylvania thrift stores have found among donations, store officials say.

“Well, we're not allowed to sell them, so we throw them away because this is a Christian organization. And people that donate to us should realize that, and they don't,” Donna Pinazza, production supervisor at a Salvation Army store in North Huntingdon, said of the sex- and drug-related donations they receive.

They give guns to police.

Most items donated to thrift stores are sold in the stores or to recyclers — even tattered clothing goes to recyclers, to stuff furniture and mattresses — but thrift store workers often are surprised by donations that are unusual, unsellable and unwelcome, store employees and nonprofit leaders say.

Police are trying to find who donated three human skulls to a Goodwill Industries store in Bellevue, Wash., in June.

Two are adult skulls that appear to have been used in a medical clinic or for instruction. The third, which is very old, appears to be that of a Native American child.

I win every time I shop at Goodwill or The Salvation Army. I always find something useful for pennies on the dollar... and need not go buy some cheap, throwaway plastic junk that is made in Communist China.

I’m glad to hear they can use even tattered clothing to stuff furniture. Didn’t know that.

I volunteer at a tiny christian thrift store, guns never come up, but little inappropriate things do, and they junk those unless they have a scrap value.

I don’t understand how anyone can think these donations are normal for a Christian charity. Society is breaking fast.

I don’t have much to say personally. Just want to share interesting items and see how others feel about it. Anyway, most questions posed here seem to be rhetorical. How do you know I am not an NSA Robot?

Oh I love to shop thrift stores! And occasional rummage sales which I can't seem to find time for. When I moved to this area, after I experienced going to thrift shops with a friend prior, I decided to see if I could furnish my new apartment with items from thrift stores and forgo buying in stores. It was a challenge I wanted to meet to see if it could be done.

Well I did it! Though it took about three years to get everything I wanted here. Especially since I had a certain theme for each room. And because I also work so finding time wasn't always possible on a weekly. But I did go at least once a month.

More than once I was astounded at the NEW items I found....pots and pans, to furniture. I also allowed myself use of the dollar stores.....but nothing could be over a dollar.

I also have a beautiful deck that looks like a garden....all from items at thrift shops...including a restored iron webbed table and chairs.

I think it helps if you have the ability for interior design as well.....my kitchen is 'Vineyard" style...similar to that you'd find at "Olive Garden".....I got wine bottles free from the liquor store which worked well with the theme. What fun it was to find just the right things for little than nothing!

The bedroom is vintage style....and the living room as well....with some antiques to top it off.

So it can be done very well...but you have to give yourself the time to bring it together.

I assume the thrift store wouldn’t sell firearms because it would have to have a commercial firearms license to do so. Way too much hassle for too little a reward.
