Op-Ed: The Arctic's Huge Store of Methane Gas: 'Ticking time-bomb?' (Methane Gas New Evil)
Digital Journal ^ | July 13, 2014 22:12 GMT | Karen Graham

Posted on 07/13/2014 9:13:51 PM PDT by Up Yours Marxists

Some climate change proponents are saying the huge amounts of methane gas, stored under the Arctic ice is a potential "ticking time bomb." They claim that we must stop extracting fossil fuels that put more CO2 into our atmosphere or face disaster.

Methane is only one of a number of gases called greenhouse gases (GHG) that can absorb and emit infrared radiation, or in other words, this means they can trap and absorb heat. The most abundant GHG is water vapor, followed by carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and CFC's. By measuring atmospheric infrared radiation, climatologists are able to detect trends in the Earth's climate. Although methane is not the most abundant GHG, it is one of the strongest, being 80-times more potent than carbon dioxide. Methane is actually 21 times more efficient in absorbing infrared radiation than CO2, even though it only hangs around 10 years in the atmosphere. Knowing these well documented facts about methane brings us to the latest predictions and warning.

See how dangerous global warming is? It caused the sun’s magnetic field to decline!

And they will claim that it was caused by “Global Warming” .. er.. “Climate Change”.

They have set up a non-falsifiable premise, “Climate Change”. No matter what happens, they can claim that they predicted it.

Need to find a way to turn all that methane into carbon dioxide ;-)

Fines and regulations will fix this. The Feds are trying to figure out who will pay the regulatory fees and fines once they have destroyed all the businesses (the evil capitalists), the global economy, and everyone has run out of money. The only one left to fine or sue is God but they haven’t been able to find a good address for him yet...: )

The suns magnetic field is declining...so by about 2020 there will be no sunspots...

Great, there goes 10 meter DX. If there are very few sunspots and it quiets down, amateur radio might only be more useful at night on 160 and 80 meters.

IIRC, wasn’t there some grand extinction due to a huge permafrost “belch”? I’ll have to go look it up.

You know you’re walking through the grocery store, pushing your cart (or ‘trolley’ for you English fags) minding your own business, trying not to block the aisle—and you walk right into this invisible stale fart fog. And there are little old ladies boxing you in.
So you have to stand there and breathe it in.
Man I hate that. Does anyone have the UN’s phone number, or Eeepa? I’m turning them in next time.

Based on over 13 models measuring projected sea ice melt in the Arctic regions, it is expected that the North Pole will be ice-free in 20 years. But the news from the latest study is indicating that with increased leaking of methane gas, the projections may be wrong, and an ice-free pole could happen sooner

Oh, I thought we've near record ice at the North Pole for the last two years.

Another bout of "science" at the Op-ed page...

‘Quick, slaughter all the cows to stop the supply of methane gas.”

A number of government policies are having the effect of reducing cattle herds. Elimination of grazing rights on public lands is one. Using corn for biofuels instead of feed has driven the price of beef up, demand down, and resulted in reduction in herd sizes. Finally, Fed money printing is accelerating food price inflation making beef unaffordable for many families.

The article mentions the production of methane via fracking. Energy independence for the US and stable or declining energy prices for US citizens is not desired by progressives who prefer high priced “alternatives” and energy rationing. With the destruction of the coal industry almost complete, the left is gearing up to destroy the petroleum industry in the US through the same environmental regulation tactics they’ve used to kill off the coal industry. Adding methane to the list pollutants they can regulate enhances their ability to go after exploration for oil and natural gas. End exploration through regulation and the depletion of existing sources over time will drive fossil fuel prices up. Another tactic will certainly be putative taxes on the oil industry in the name of “fairness” just like they’ve taxed and destroyed big tobacco over the past 20 years.

The sheeple have been convinced carbon is evil and must be regulated. Now it is on to methane. The environmental crusade will never end until 99% of the American population lives “equally” in third world squalor.

Juxtaposing sentence 1 with sentence 2 is just ridiculous. Who writes this stuff? DC Comics?
Yes methane is a danger that possibly caused great planetary changes in primeval times.
No our exhaling doesn’t cause it or exacerbate it.

"Based on over 13 models measuring projected sea ice melt in the Arctic regions, it is expected that the North Pole will be ice-free in 20 years."

I have spent a career writing technical reports, the first in 1966, and the most recent last week. I was taught that the biggest sin in a technical report is to ignore any data I was aware of that was contrary to the data presented in the report. It could be analyzed with dismissive comment and it could be dismissed as inaccurate (as long as the inaccuracies were stated with detail). But it could not be ignored.

With this in mind,. any person who is unaware of the recent record increase in Arctic ice is either too stupid to author an article such as this, or to devious to warrant consideration as a reliable author.
