Cats and dogs dressed like humans: historical photos

Here's photographic proof that the LOLCat phenomenon has a long history behind it.
American photographer Harry Whittier Frees (1879-1953) created vignettes of animals dressed in tiny outfits made by his mother. These pictures, from the United States Library of Congress, showcase some of his works, which were typically used for postcards and children's books.

Hmm...some of the kitten photos seem to depict drunken or opiated kittens. By opiated, I mean kittens that had been given an opiate syrup.

Here's photographic proof that the LOLCat phenomenon has a long history behind it. Still don't like dressing up cats and dogs.
But thanks for the ping. Still letting my tuxedos go nekkid.

I’m not sure I want to know how they got some of them to stay in the pose long enough to take the picture. But still very cute

I remember some of these from children’s books that my grandmother kept from my mother’s childhood. One was titled “Four Little Puppies”. It’s still available, too (Amazon, of course).

I agree. They look very much posed and that their outfits are fixed on
hooks behind the kitties. I do not think for a moment that any of the
poses in those pictures occurred naturally.
However, they are quite a charming history of LOL Cats, certainly.
Thank you for the ping, SA&, and thank you, anonymous link donor.

Aww! Our grandparents and great grandparents Cheezeburgers!
I love looking at old photos. You have to wonder, how did they get the clothes on the cats? If I tried that on my kitties, I’d need stitches.
Thank you Slings and thank you anonymous . You both are pawsome.

So cute.
Brings back memories, of when I was a child....and tried to dress my beloved cat *Inky* in doll clothes and take her for a ride in a doll baby carriage around the neighborhood. Inky jumped out.....ran away....and didn't come home again for days and days after that.
I cried mt eyes out, thinking she was lost forever! LOL

Mega AWWWWW. I have a hard time getting AndyCat’s collar on
but he’s a major big male cat. These kittehs maybe enjoyed getting dressed up. I did have a female dog and cat who didn’t mind wearing silly hats; in fact they had a bit of a rivalry going
”I’m the cutest pet.” “No, I am!”

Animals can be highly individual in that respect - some hate the encumbrance, some love the attention.
