How about the practice of Hydraulic Fracturing to stimulate production in oil and gas wells?

Plenty of information out there on both sides of the issue, pro and con (one side has facts, the other has opinions), and the reason there is controversy is primarily because one very vocal and well funded side opposes resource development.

If you liked that topic, but a comprehensive review of literature is (understandably) too daunting, you could just pick out a few literary examples of virtues being mocked and vices being celebrated, and as part of the paper, simply post the question as to whether these examples are merely anecdotal, or part of a trend that has led to the moral decline of our society from the Enlightenment to today.

Just as one quick example, the section of innocent young women was often a celebrated topic in literature. Off the top of my head, I would think of the poetry of John Donne, and in particular “The Flea”:

Mark but this flea, and mark in this,
How little that which thou deniest me is;
It sucked me first, and now sucks thee,
And in this flea our two bloods mingled be.
Thou know’st that this cannot be said
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead;
Yet this enjoys before it woo;
And pampered swells with one blood made of two,
And this, alas, is more than we would do!

O stay, three lives in one flea spare,
Where we almost, yea, more than married are.
This flea is you and I, and this
Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is.

Though parents grudge, and you, we’re met,
And cloistered in these living walls of jet.
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that self-murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?
Wherein could this flea guilty be,
Except in that drop which it sucked from thee?
Yet thou triumph’st, and say’st that thou
Find’st not thyself nor me the weaker now.
’Tis true; then learn how false fears be;
Just so much honour, when thou yield’st to me,
Will waste, as this flea’s death took life from thee.

That's a good idea and very timely.

Sorry, didn’t proofread enough - it should say pose (not post) the question, and seduction (not section) of innocent young women.

Referenced an article by Dennis Prager and the left's infatuation with the thoughts of children.

Great little essay by Dennis Prager recently: Why the Left Doesn't Care about Bad Economic News:

They don't care because the left is not interested in prosperity; the left is interested in inequality and in the environment. Furthermore, the worse the economic situation, the more voters are likely to vote Democrat. The worse the economic situation, the greater the number of people receiving government assistance; the greater the number of people receiving government assistance, the greater the number of people who will vote Democrat.

The Left's strategy actually has a name: Cloward-Piven. The cure for liberalism's failures is always more liberalism! More government!

Therefore, the task is to manufacture more of those failures that only Progressivism can cure!

Indeed, it's likely that Obama's current "immigration crisis" is an example of applied Cloward-Piven. Congress wouldn't act, so the Pied Piper of Chicago and Washington summoned the lemmings across the Rio Grande! Voila! A crisis for government to solve!

Some thoughts. Good luck on the course!

The old way was to punish exclusion. The new way is to punish lack of inclusion.

Naughty John Donne. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flea_%28poem%29

The Flea is an erotic metaphysical poem (first published posthumously in 1633) by John Donne (1572–1631). The exact date of its composition is unknown.

The poem uses the conceit of a flea, which has sucked blood from the male speaker and his female lover, to serve as an extended metaphor for the relationship between them. The speaker tries to convince a lady to sleep with him, arguing that if their blood mingling in the flea is innocent, then sexual mingling would also be innocent. His argument hinges on the belief that blood mixes during sexual intercourse.[1]

Not only that, but he uses religious references to aid in his seduction, such as the line “Purpled thy nail with the blood of innocence”, in which he puts the flea in the role of Christ (and perhaps also the Trinity as he had previously referred to “three” lives within the flea), and the woman’s fingernail to the “nail” used to crucify the “blood of innocence”.

Interesting. I was wondering/thinking purpled thy nail was some sort of aroused phallic reference. :)

From Prager's article:

I caught the headline today about a judge not allowing Redskin to be used. Our country is on the brink of explosion, and this is what concerns these people!?

As part of his seduction he was trying to stop the woman from killing the flea (”O stay, three lives in one flea spare,”) with his elaborate deceit. But when the woman tries to fend off his advances by killing the flea (”Cruel and sudden, hast thou since - Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence?)” he just uses her act to continue his metaphor in order to get her to “yield”.
