ALERT: Delivered By Airplane: Ebola Now Threatens 21 Million People In Major Metro Area
SHTF Plan ^ | 7/27/14 | Mac Slavo

Nigerian health authorities raced to stop the spread of Ebola on Saturday after a man sick with one of the world’s deadliest diseases brought it by plane to Lagos, Africa’s largest city with 21 million people.

The fact that the traveler from Liberia could board an international flight also raised new fears that other passengers could take the disease beyond Africa due to weak inspection of passengers and the fact Ebola’s symptoms are similar to other diseases.

Officials in the country of Togo, where the sick man’s flight had a stopover, also went on high alert after learning that Ebola could possibly have spread to a fifth country.

Screening people as they enter the country may help slow the spread of the disease, but it is no guarantee Ebola won’t travel by airplane, according to Dr. Lance Plyler, who heads Ebola medical efforts in Liberia for aid organization Samaritan’s Purse.

“Unfortunately the initial signs of Ebola imitate other diseases, like malaria or typhoid,” he said.

video here

Shows them gowning up, etc. Pretty frightening to think they got it in spite of such extensive precautions.

"I was always under the impression that if an AIDS infected man slept with a straight woman the virus could be spread?"

It was explained to me that a big factor in whether it is transmitted or not depends on if there is any "damage" done during the act.

Think "virgin" compared to "hotdog down a hallway" and the different chances they are taking.

Really. Tell that to all the little kids with hemophilia that died of AIDS. Or the grandma I treated during residency that died of AIDS after her heart surgery. Glad you are such an expert in infectious disease Einstein....

Wow. Just Wow. Ignorant advice like yours does as much damage as the diseases we are trying to fight. One can argue merits of quarantine or not, but you are dead (and I do mean dead) wrong on how HIV/AIDS is spread. When you see a dying little kid I hope you dont ask how the anal sex was. Innocents can and do get the disease. And straight women do get it from bi or drug using husbands, and sometimes find out about their husbands side activities when they are diagnosed.....

“Aids patients should have been quarantined”

Most HIV+ patients are asymptomatic (and infectious) for 8-10 years before they show signs of being sick.

Quarantine in the period 1978-1985 would have made a big difference - but there was no test. All the cases 1985-1995 were infected by 1985, and after 1995 there was treatment.

I’d read that, but I was thinking it was (just) Dr Brantley’s wife and children who’d returned home/to US.

The way I originally read it, was that Dr Brantley didn’t come in - to US - for this family event. But, I may be wrong. Either way....still very scary. Especially considering the exposure possibilities, incubation times, etc.

Thanks for the ping.

“Innocents can and do get the disease. And straight women do get it from bi or drug using husbands, and sometimes find out about their husbands side activities when they are diagnosed.....”

What you say is unfortunately true. Women do get it from men sometimes. However not at a rate that would support an epidemic. Children also get it from an infected mother.

And that’s doubly sad, because men are the carriers of this disease and they almost never get it from a woman. (unless they share a needle with her)

If you are a woman in a long term sexual relationship with an infected man, you will likely get infected eventually. I know a woman who was infected by her X-husband.

The infected man almost certainly didn’t get it from a woman through sex even if he sleeps around. It’s almost never transmitted in that direction. He got it from another man or from a needle.

However, the infection rate between men and women is not high enough to cause an epidemic in the heterosexual population. And, in the thirty years that Aids has been out there, it has never took off in the heterosexual population. And it won’t for the reasons I stated.

That said, it is tragic when an innocent women or child gets it. Life sometimes isn’t fair.

The blood supply and especially the FFP used for hemophiliacs were out there spreading it as well.

Around here the grocery stores have a cannister of wet wipes at the door. You grab one and wipe off the cart handle as you pull it out.

“The blood supply and especially the FFP used for hemophiliacs were out there spreading it as well.”

You are correct in this. People with Hemophilia/coagulation disorder amounts to roughly 1% of aids infections. It’s interesting that of the heterosexual cases of HIV infection, the occurrence in sex partners of those with that condition amounts to roughly 2%. I’m not sure exactly why.

He’s kind of correct, in that it would stop in the gay community.

Now, yes, man-to-woman transmission is possible. So women who sleep with homosexuals are at risk.

Woman-to-man sex, however, lacking an existing STD or unconventional sex practices of Africa (dry sex, anal sodomy), has never been recorded.

Maybe because hemophiliacs are given factor concentrates that draw from multiple donors rather than just one like a blood transfusion. But I thought you knew everything.....

HIV can and is spread by heterosexual sex, from mother to child, and from ways not related to anal sex or drug use by the ultimate victim. Ive seen it multiple times, and started practicing 30 years ago before AIDS was even known as a diagnosis. It was at that time called GRID (gay related immunodeficiency). I have a lot of experience with treating infectious diseases over those years. Once it reaches endemic levels in the population, which thank God has not happened here, spread by heterosexual sex and other methods may even outpace spread by anal sex.

It never will for one simple reason. Because unlike other STD’s, infections from female to male are extremely rare. Of course with drug use it’s the same.

I’ve read that in other countries it is spread between heterosexual couples. I have no idea why, obviously something else is going on. What do you think?

Hussein Obama is inviting this in with our open borders.

Yes, he is... also when illegals get here Obama's transporting them around the country. It's only a matter of time.

Can’t disagree about the casting of Tom Cullen, Stu Redman, Lloyd, and Trashcan. I thought Larry was pretty good, too.

Rob Lowe as Nick set my teeth on edge. He just never quite gelled for me. Nadine was okay, but her voice bugged me.

It’s been so long since I read “The Dead Zone” or saw the TV movie that I forgot who was in it.

People from these countries where the out break is should either not be permitted to travel on airlines, or they should at least be quarnatined for 30 days before a flight, and another 30 days after they get off the plane.

If they have a headache, sniffle or anything at all after the quarantine don’t allow them to leave their home country.

I finished reading the book on the Reston incident, and I was amazed that the people who “whiffed the smell from the test tube” didn’t tell anyone, and continued leaving the lab and going home.

They surely knew better. Everyone was lucky that this strain wasn’t lethal for humanes, but it very well could have been.
