Study: Religious children are less able to distinguish fantasy from reality

According to new research from Boston University, young children with a religious background are less able to distinguish between fantasy and reality compared with their secular counterparts.

In two studies, 66 kindergarten-age children were presented with three types of stories - realistic, religious and fantastical. The researchers then queried the children on whether they thought the main character in the story was real or fictional.

While nearly all children found the figures in the realistic narratives to be real, secular and religious children were split on religious stories. Children with a religious upbringing tended to view the protagonists in religious stories as real, whereas children from non-religious households saw them as fictional.

Although this might be unsurprising, secular and religious children also differed in their interpretation of fantasy narratives where there was a supernatural or magical storyline.

"Secular children were more likely than religious children to judge the protagonist in such fantastical stories to be fictional," wrote the researchers.

"The results suggest that exposure to religious ideas has a powerful impact on children's differentiation between reality and fiction, not just for religious stories but also for fantastical stories."

Wow, this study sounds incredibly objective and rigorously scientific.

So, 66 five year old kids are PROOF that religion sucks. Who'd have guessed?

Why is it a “good question”, especially when the story’s origin frames it in the context of a parable?

The Koran has Jesus speaking as an infant, turning clay doves into real doves, and calling tables filled with food out of heaven. The “good question” is to whether those stories are real or not.

Like global warming?

And like, two men can "have" a baby? And a man can "become" a woman?

Yeah, we live in a fantasy world alright. /sarc

.
Have you not noticed that when the word “study” is used, it almost automatically excludes the use of scientific methods?

Just as we need to evaluate exact poll questions and how such question were asked with respect to being told how people responded to a poll, we need to evaluate exactly what children were presented with in this study get the complete picture as to why children responded the way that they did.

Not an issue with Reformed Christians, where truth is what matters, and there are no unscriptural holidays such as Christmas or Easter.

Best to teach from day one the discernment of true from false.

You’ll not find many “fairy tales” taught as being true in the Reformed community.

Ha! Liberal adults have this problem. Even children can see through their nonsense.

Dehumanization ——>Alienation ——>Annihilation.

There...fixed it for you. We are in between Dehumanization and Alienation. Once alienated, only personal firearms will stop us from Annihilation.

Thank God for our Founding Fathers!

That may be true to some marginal degree for children. But for adults, it is clear that liberals, who tend to be irreligious, are pathologically unable to differentiate fantasy from reality at all. Ergo, the insistence that barack obama is a great president, that his foreign policy is top-notch, and that the economy is on a boom cycle.

Jesus says in Mark 9:42, “Whoever offends one of these little ones who believes in Me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea.”,

The ungodly, who are spiritually blind, will be judged very harshly by God for attacking the faith of children.

Children with a religious upbringing tended to view the protagonists in religious stories as real, whereas children from non-religious households saw them as fictional.

In other words, the BBC conflates all religious stories as fantasy. In their mind, no biblical character is or was real. There was no Moses, no David, no Abraham, or Solomon, etc. It's all just make-believe stories in the BBC's mind, like unicorns.

I cannot believe the media runs articles about these stupid “studies” as if they are not baloney. 66 kids somehow represents everyone now?
